Why Does Missy Elliot Speak Like That?

I've noticed this for a while but she speaks with a southern accent, when she is from Virginia. Why? I think a few rappers speak that way too, when they are not from the south. Is this some new kind of "cool" hip hop trend? They sound silly to me.

Strange that a person from the South would speak with a Southern accent. I heard people in Brooklyn speak Brooklynese, too.

I know a bunch of people from both Virginia and West Virginia. Nearly all of them speak with a Southern accent. Lingo too, as in "Y'all are kin to Nay-Nay, ain'tcha?" (direct quote). biggrin

Maybe not the first, but it's the South. Virginians would be all kinds of confused if you told them they weren't Southerners. And the Atlanta accent isn't all that different from the Virginia accent. But even within the same state, accents can vary. I've heard Missy speak, and she doesn't seem to be faking her accent at all. I do know this - depending on where you are, your accent can vary. I lost my accent years ago, but just about as soon as I step foot in the South again, it comes back full tilt.

She sounds absolutely NOTHING like an ATLien. You can tell she's from VA 'cause, even though they're in the south, they still have a somewhat northern accent.

thanks for clearing this up for me. i guess i don't know my southern accents well enough to distinguish one region from the other. i know what you mean by picking up accents when you go back home too. i tend to sound like a brit when i'm in the uk and a yank when i'm in the states. though i lived in ny for years and never picked up that accent.

Now with that particular word, I know people in Memphis talk like that. Nelly, J-Kwon and the rest of those St. Louis cats claim to talk like that, but "errytime" I've ran into people from Missouri, they say that's a total front.
