Jimmy Smith Died. a Hammond B3 organ pioneer I am not sure how many of you are Jazz fans but this guy was a monster on the
a Hammond B3 organ. ----- *Jimmy Smith, a Hammond B3 organ pioneer, died Feb. 8 at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., apparently of natural causes. He was 79. Smith began playing the trademark instrument in the early '50s. By the '60s, he was in his prime and enjoying Billboard success with such hits as "Organ Grinder Swing" and "Hobo Flats." Generation X became hip to Smith after the Beastie Boys sampled his "Root Down" for their track of the same name on the 1994 album "Ill Communication." He continued to record and tour in recent years, and recently finished an album with longtime friend Joey DeFrancesco, "Legacy," due next Tuesday via Concord. "Jimmy was one of the greatest and most innovative musicians of our time," DeFrancesco said in a statement. "I love the man and I love the music. He was my idol, my mentor and my friend." | |

I have a couple of albums by him, he was great.
Pop-only fans will probably recognise him from his solo on Michael Jackson "Bad" putting on this CD now in memory of... R.I.P. Jimmy

I heard him play live a couple years ago and he wasn't looking so good. He had to take a break and go backstage after playing about 20 minutes. But he played like a motherfucker that night! Sigh. RIP. | |

I caught the tail end of them mentioning him this morning, but thought he was celebrating a birthday or something. I had no idea he passed. That brotha will truly be missed.

I remember seeing him live at Chi-Town's Blue Note.
He brought the house down, eating fish sandwiches between numbers and fooling around abit while he's chewing on his dinner. He played a song called "90's Hammond Boogie Woogie" and man, it felt like a whole orchestra playing. He was the ONLY one playing while his band were gawking at the back like the rest of us. He's actualy the one(along with Fats Waller) who made me go back and appreciete the Hammond B3 organ. | |

The grand-daddy of the B3. Playing it from 1953 into the Y2K you gotta know something.
Outside of the guitar, B3 is my favorite instrument. You get the best of both worlds with... 
...The Dynamic Duo "I got my organ from a loan shark had it shipped to the warehouse. I stayed in that warehouse, I would say, six months to a year. I would do just like the guys do--take my lunch, then I'd go and set down at this beast. Nobody showed my anything, man, so I had to fiddle around with my stops." I tend to lean toward his ballads along with the burners, my favorite being Bayou. It's just an example of how expressive this instrument can be in the right hands. What shame. He had a gig coming up at Yoshi's out here in Oakland next week with one of his best disciples Joey DeFrancesco. You know Joey D is going to do something special. Check up folks, the roots to the tree seem to be withering away faster and faster. Get out there and see some of these legends that are still around while you have the opportunity.

Yeah, big props and prayers for Jimmy Smith. I'm a fan and have several of his albums (And I mean albums, as in vinyl!  ). I saw him several times at the old Cellar Door in Georgetown, DC. I don't know anyone who could top him on the Hammond!Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

Truly bad news. My father is a serious jazz fan, so I grew up with some of Jimmy's classic Verve sessions on vinyl.
