Bassist Mike Watt currently working with The Stooges gave an interview to Neumu online. He talks about his experience at Slane Castle back in August 2004, opening for Madonna's reInvention show.

"I've learned a lot from [The Stooges]. I did a bunch of gigs with them this summer. Like last week, I opened for Madonna at a castle in Ireland [laughing]. She was intense. She's only six months, eight months younger than me. She was singing and dancing. She was great, and so in control of the situation, running the whole thing but being the star of the thing. It was bizarre; she's not a hand puppet, that's for sure. She's incredible.

I wanted to talk to her but I didn't want to force myself. I was standing there with my mouth open the whole time. I watched her sound check and I watched her gig. She talked a little to Iggy. She goes, "So, is that what you're gonna wear onstage?" You know, just jeans and boots. He goes, "Yeah," and she goes, "Woah." She was really singing and playing, she played guitar a little, it was amazing. All of us we were watching it, she's a real deal. She does do the work, man, and that's admirable. "

don't get too excited. back in 1997, she was working with Babyface again, before ROL took shape. the lead-up to all of her albums are littered with aborted collaborations. hell, she damn near had a whole album recorded with Shep Pettibone when she decided to go the r&b route with Bedtime Stories in 1994.

Exactly.I like her approach to making music.She obviously doesn't like to repeat herself musically.If the songs sound too much like a previous project,she throws them out and starts over from scratch with new collaborators.That's what happened with Shep Pettibone after 'Erotica'...a bunch of tracks were recorded and then dicarded.She decided to go in another direction.It's interesting to note that her 1998 album almost became 'Bedtime Stories Part 2',before she wisely decided to work with William Orbit and go in a bold,new direction.

On 'American Life',too many songs start off with a simple guitar riff ("Hollywood","I'm So Stupid","Love Profusion","Nothing Fails","Intervention").It becomes tedious after awhile.Don't get me wrong,I think acoustic guitar is wonderful and Maddy certainly deserves credit for making albums that are actually "musical",unlike alot of today's R&B and hip hop.But I just think the guitar is a little heavy on 'American Life'.

MADONNA is re-inventing herself again---this time as the Queen of Rock.

The undisputed pop goddess has nearly finished her next album and it will have a heavy guitar sound.


I've got my hands on a secret blueprint for the new material which is out at the end of the year.I can reveal the poppy,dance feel of the last release 'American Life' has gone in favour of an edgy theme.Madonna will even play most of the big guitar riffs herself.Her inspiration has come from the rise of British guitar rock bands.A source close to Madge told me "Living in Britain,she has become a real fan of Franz Ferdinard and loves the kitshy sound of The Darkness".

She has enlisted help from several big name producers for the project.Swedish duo Bloodshy and Avant,who produced "Toxic" for Britney Spears,have been asked to collaborate with Madonna to write a song.Christian "Bloodshy" Karlsson and Pontus "Avant" Winnberg won a Grammy for "Toxic" just this week.Winnberg revealed Madonna called them in person to make sure they took the job---but their contribution will be less rocky than the other tracks planned for the album.He said "We're going to give Madonna's sound a real disco feel".

Madge is also working with French electro whizz Mirwais and Stuart Price---the main producer.The album will include a cover of "Imagine",which she showcased during last year's tour.Monte Pittman,her official guitarist and teacher,has co-written a rock song called "I Love New York" and she will record the riffs.

The song "I Love New York" really exists.It was written and rehearsed during prepartions for the Re-Invention tour.It has been described as "a fun little rock song,not too deep really".It was co-written by bandmember Monte Pittman.

Another new song that really exists is "The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You",which Maddy composed for a musical she was writing last year.At one point,she was planning to perform it on her tour.It was co-written with Mirwais and is described as "very old school....with a 20s feel to it".It may surface on her new CD,unless she decides to film the musical after all.

And, I'm a bit confused, I would neevr describe AL as having a "poppy, dance" feel. Dance, I guess, but not pop...
