We were talking about slow jams with a "rap" in them last week. There is a slow jam that I had not heard in years and I heard it today on the radio. I guess it's Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, I'm not sure.

Anyway, the male lead singer has a "rap" at the beginning of the song and he is talking to his woman who has just hung up the phone. He pauses for a few seconds each time he speaks like he is waiting and then replying to her response.

The lady DJ at the station, Lady V, who has been on the air here for years, was responding to each and every question he asked, as if she was the woman he was talking to. She responded with answers perfectly that matched his response and her timing was absolutely perfect before he answered her.

It goes kind of like this:

Singer: Who was that you were talking to on the phone?

Lady V: Oh, I was just talking to my girlfriend on the phone.

Singer: Oh, you were talking to your girlfriend, huh? Well, why did you hang up? (I'm not sure of his exact words, I'm just trying to give you the picture).

Singer: When I come in you act funny, you act like you're afraid for me to touch you.

Lady V: I'm not acting funny, I've just got somewhere to go.

Singer: Where are you going?

Lady V: My and my girlfriend are going up to the store.

Singer: Wait a minute, I want to talk to you.

Lady V: Look now baby, I got to go now, my girlfriend's outside.

Singer: Come here sit down, I need to talk to you.

Lady V: Come on now baby, I told you my girlfriend's outside and I got to go.

Singer: I know your girlfriend's out there, I need to talk to you about this.

These aren't the exact "quote for quote" words but the "rap" is basically about a man thinking a woman is leaving the house to go out and cheat on him before the singing starts.

I had forgotten how good the local DJ, Lady V, could be when she wanted to be...but of course, she's been around since the "old school". lol

I haven't heard this song in years but I heard it the other day in my car on the way back to work from lunch. I got out of the car to go in to work before the singing started. Does anyone know what song I am talking about? Is this Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes?

touched

THATs...THATS IT!!!

I have never seen it b4. It is very rare where I am, in Minneapolis there are no Stang record labeled albums up here.

Sunday was a bright day, yesterday
Dark cloud has come in2 my way.. cry

I have Somebody Loves You on a old TDK cassette. It instantly became one of my favorite "mommy's oldies" jams.

I saw Tavares a few months ago on a PBS Disco special. They performed their hits "More Than A Woman" and "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel".So they're still around, but they are now a trio. Two of the other brothers are no longer performing.
