I think that somayou have been lookin' under "Funk" when the songs are actually classified as "soft funk", "extra soft funk" and "non-funk funk".

... Some of the songs are funky...but would they be considered "Funk"?

... Even though this is the non-Prince sector of the Non-official Prince site...it's still Prince. He's up there with James, Larry, Bootsy etc... so when we say "Funk" I just kind of expected that it would be.

As a musician who plays and grew up listening to Funk (Bass player ), I have to agree with Anon on some of the songs posted. Looking at this list, there are only about 9-10 that are truly considered Funk and can compete with Prince's "let's work" or "She's always in my hair".....M.

I'm even more dumbfounded. I just Googled this Jermaine Jackson song "Erucu".
It's even listed as Disco somewhere.

I heard it...it's not funk! o.k. maybe "Gay Funk" (I forgot that one)

If this were the Clay Aiken forum...then anything in comparison could be funk. Even though this is the non-Prince sector of the Non-official Prince site...it's still Prince. He's up there with James, Larry, Bootsy etc... so when we say "Funk" I just kind of expected that it would be.

I don't think a semi-funky bassline (which one of those songs has) defines funk.

Heading out...won't be pickin' up any new music today.

[No offense to Jermaine...I like him. Just don't think he's FUNK. I doubt he that thinks he's funk for that matter.]

i find your contribution to the thread rude. do not think i dont know anything about funk, because u can ask anyone here.and they'll tell you.

Yikes! What happened here?

My posts weren't directed toward you...either of you. Don't take it Personal...hey! there's another funky Jermaine song for your list.

It's not as if you guys posted comments or anything. I entered this thread and encountered THE LIST. My response was pretty much to IT. (I reacted the same way at Barnes and Noble last week when they had all this Quincy stuff and no Herbie. ) No one was offended there. It's an inventory thing. This is a list thing.

A list that I still say is not at all consistent. It's as weak as it is strong. I seriously thought for a minute that you guys were clowning...and that would have been funny. I see now that you're not...and that's just scary.

Fitness, I don't question that you know these songs. You obviously know far more of them than I do. I was hoping that you guys would enlighten...but the List just made it all more confusing.

Operative words being "...from the list...".
Of the edited list, some are without question incredible songs (Funk and Funky), others are just funky but not at all funk.

Note: Without biggrin emoticons biggrin you really can't get the playful nature of my comments but if you look between the lines...you'll see them.

NOW! Let's all get along...It would be nice to have a couple more girlfriends.

You're right. And this is what attracted me to this thread. And I did just that, begin to listen to the stuff I hadn't heard. But as soon as you hit a weak link you start to question the credibility of the Almighty List.

I haven't actually complained about the songs. I didn't dislike any of those I heard. In fact I like very many. Even the Jermaine song. The point I make is that they are not funk.

I'm really somewhat baffled. (No sarcasm or anything)
I considered that perhaps some of you grew up with Funk and have a Funk connection with the songs...even if they are non-funk.
I considered that it could be a regional thing.

I was hoping that someone would enlighten me. But it seems that everyone takes personal affront. Guess Funk is a sensitive area with people.

Again, maybe it's just subjective.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Title doesn't change the song.

I guess people just have different perceptions. For example, awhile back we had a thread titled "Is Jamiroquai the last great funk band?" and there were alot of heated responses, lol. There were many people who don't consider them a funk band, but I listed several songs by them that I consider funk.

I've never heard that particular Jermaine Jackson song. Perhaps it may be disco, I don't know because I've never heard that song. Even if it is disco, funk and disco are both forms of R&B and in the mid to late 1970s, the two seemed to be "married" so to speak. If you really think about it, disco is really a particular style of funk.

Jermaine Jackson would definately not be considered a funk artist but in the early 1980s, just about every R&B artist was doing funk songs. Some cuts by Jermaine that I consider funk would be "Let's Get Serious", "Feelin' Free", and "Burnin' Hot" from his 1980 album called "Let's Get Serious".

Luther Vandross was even doing funk in the early 1980s. From his first album, "Never Too Much", the song "Super Lady" is definately a funk track. He has also worked with the BB&Q Band, Change, and Chic. Luther later went on to be known strictly by most as a balladeer, but he definately could get funky in the early days. People tend to general artists strictly by what they are best known for.

As far as looking up something on the internet or any other form of media and seeing it classified as disco, a lot of the time the media does not know what it's talking about when it comes to music. The media tends to classify a lot of early 1980s songs as disco strictly because they are fast songs made by a black artist. I see disco compilations in the record store all the time that will include Donna Summer, GQ, Foxy, etc., and then they may include the Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" from 1982. The last year of disco was 1979 and any other disco that followed was underground. I even saw Rick James' "Super Freak" on a disco compilation. Now we all know that's not a disco song.

The ones that make these compilations and post these sites seem to be rich, white executives who don't know a thing about black music, disco, or funk. They think if it's black and fast, it must be disco. A lot of them don't know a thing about white music either. The only thing they know is money.

If this were the Clay Aiken forum...then anything in comparison could be funk. Even though this is the non-Prince sector of the Non-official Prince site...it's still Prince. He's up there with James, Larry, Bootsy etc... so when we say "Funk" I just kind of expected that it would be.

See, that's where the problem comes in. Prince has many types of fans. He has his funk or R&B fans that were with him since day one. These people were listening to Prince and they were also listening to all the other funk artists on the radio at the time.

Then, Prince has his pop fans that first discovered him with "Little Red Corvette". These fans obviously were not listening to R&B radio because if they were, they would have heard of Prince years before "Little Red Corvette". Then they go back and start buying Prince's earlier albums. They missed out on all the funk that was going on by other artists while these albums were popular and tend to explore only the artists that influenced Prince while he was growing up. Therefore, the only funk they know is what Prince likes.

There's all types of funk out there. I've heard traces of it in disco, pop, rock, electro and I've even heard traces of it in 1960's music before it was officially called "funk".

i find your contribution to the thread rude. do not think i dont know anything about funk, because u can ask anyone here.and they'll tell you.

I can vouch for you. Hell, I've come to you plenty of times about particular songs. If you don't know funk, then no one does.

Hey, Anon,
The following tunes are all from the lists on this thread....
If you listen to anything below and can't understand it , then you're right, you really did "miss out on the whole funk era"...and I'll stack any of it against Prince any day....

Great list!

Operative words being "...from the list...".
Of the edited list, some are without question incredible songs (Funk and Funky), others are just funky but not at all funk.

confused My point was only that, if you've listened to the songs, and don't understand why someone might consider them funk songs , then you wouldn't understand that era, which contained a wide scope of funk. Of course there are many degrees of funk..., and yeah, in the end, it's a pretty subjective thing ...I think one way to approach it is to present your own list of what , for you, is a "funk song, your own subjective list. I'll bet that some would agree with it, while others might shrug, and think, "that's not that funky", which would prompt them to add their own list...in other words, just making fun of people's lists is one thing, why not contribute something other than that?
