"Slow Dancin" by Chaka Khan and Rick James (1982)

Now, this one I don't remember but I need to get it. Is it on the same Chaka Khan album that has "Tearin' It Up" and the remake of the Jackson 5 song, "Got To Be There"?[/quote]

Yes,it's from Chaka's 1982 album that also includes those other two songs that you listed. With it's slow funky groove and vocal assistance from the red-hot Rick James,"Slow Dancin" had all the makings of a huge hit single, but amazingly,it was never released as a single.Because Rick recorded for Motown, and Chaka was on Warner Bros, there was some kind of conflict whcih prevented the song from becoming a single.Regardless,it received tremendous airplay on R&B radio back then.I can't believe that you (a huge Rick James fan) have never heard it!

Love all of those, especially the KC tune and C.O.D.! music

It's amazing that KC and The Sunshine is often dismissed as a "disco band",when in fact, they had a whole lot of real funk jams.Do you remember "Do You Wanna Go Party"(1979)?

You were kicking my ass big time with your first post. I haven't heard any of those songs you posted earlier. I'm hanging on in there now. I definately remember these jams. lol

Fun City - Vernon Burch

Is this a real uptempo funky song released in either 1980 or 1981? I remember a "Fun City" from this era but I never knew who made it. I'm wondering if this is the same song.

While I'm talking to another funk lover, let me ask you about some songs that I've never been able to find because I didn't know if I had the name of the artist right.

Do you remember a group that was called either The Woods or Woods, Inc. that had a song out in 1982?

Another song I recall from the summer of 1982 was a song, I think the name of it could be "Electrophonic Funk". It has the lines..."We don't like country, we don't like rock, and we certainly don't like punk. All we wanna do is get on down with this electrophonic funk." I've never been able to find this one either. I always thought it might be made by either General Kaine or Colonel Abrams.

Another one I can't find from the summer of 1982 was by either a lady or a female group. It was a real uptempo jam called either "Pony", "Ride My Pony", or "Ride That Pony".

Don't know a lot of these songs...going down the list thinking I'm gonna get hip to new funk and I think I figured it out.

It's not that this funk is forgotton. I think that somayou have been lookin' under "Funk" when the songs are actually classified as "soft funk", "extra soft funk" and "non-funk funk".

It smells a whole lot like Coney Island cotton candy in here and I always thought that If it doesn't stank then it's not funk.

Really, how do you guys define funk? I need to feel it but maybe I'm going about it all wrong. Maybe there's a book-o-funk that I haven't read.

Perhaps we all have our own personal funkometers and it's all subjective.

This isn't like a slam or anything...haven't listened to all the songs...most are nice...some are funky...many just aren't. Not to me.

Yeah, I've heard of Sexual Harrassment. I knew them for "I Need A Freak". I've never heard "If I Gave You A Party". I see David Eye also listed another song of their's. I had always thought they had a one hit wonder 12 Inch with "I Need A Freak" but I see I was wrong. biggrin

Sexual Harrassment was a mysterious band that came out of nowhere in 1983 with the club hit "I Need a Freak".It received alot of airplay here on the West Coast.I have their album, and it's very Prince-influenced."If I Gave You A Party" is the highlight, imo.Man,I loved that song!!

"if I gave you a party, would you come?
if I kissed you on the hand, would you come?"

Very nasty and sleazy, like 'Dirty Mind' era Prince lol

The album also included "K-I-S-S-I-N-G" and "Exercise Your Ass Off".The latter song is an X-rated take on the whole fitness craze that was so popular back then, lol. These guys were huge fans of the Minneapolis Sound. In fact, they came back in 1985 with a single called "We Want Prince".

I never knew they had an actual album. I always thought "I Need A Freak" was very Prince-like also. I definately remember hearing "We Want Prince" only once but I never knew the name of the group. biggrin

They never played that one on the radio down here so I never knew it existed. They played "Got To Be There" only a few times and very few people down here remember it. They used to really pump up "Tearin' It Up". People don't remember this one because they never played it again once it went out of style. If I throw this record on for friends, though, it definately refreshes their memory. biggrin

Yes,they had an album. It has only six songs on it.The album cover featured two women. The songs that I remember are "I Need A Freak","If I Gave You A Party","K-I-S-S-I-N-G",and "Exercise Your Ass Off".There are two other songs, one of which includes the lyric "Please, please, come and give me head".I have it in my crates somewhere,I need to pull it out and give it a listen.

"We Want Prince" was released as a 12" single in 1985,but I don't know if there was a second album.

Maybe I'll give the list another try and Maybe Funk is broader than I'd thought. Some of the songs are funky...but would they be considered "Funk"?

I missed the whole funk era so I'm trying to catch up.

When I see Jermaine Jackson (and there he goes again) on the list I can't help but chuckle. Gonna give it a try...starting with him (if I can find the songs).

I'm even more dumbfounded. I just Googled this Jermaine Jackson song "Erucu".
It's even listed as Disco somewhere.

I heard it...it's not funk! o.k. maybe "Gay Funk" (I forgot that one)

If this were the Clay Aiken forum...then anything in comparison could be funk. Even though this is the non-Prince sector of the Non-official Prince site...it's still Prince. He's up there with James, Larry, Bootsy etc... so when we say "Funk" I just kind of expected that it would be.

I don't think a semi-funky bassline (which one of those songs has) defines funk.

Heading out...won't be pickin' up any new music today.

[No offense to Jermaine...I like him. Just don't think he's FUNK. I doubt he that thinks he's funk for that matter.]
