Hendrix Invasion On Britain When Jimi got to England in late 66, all the British cats, i.e. The Beatles, The Stones, The Yardbirds (Clapton, Beck, Page) The Who, were all sitting pretty making a fortune playing their version of Black American music, i.e. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, etc. Then Jimi came and turned England on it's head. He alone took back what the English bands were doing, put his out of this world spin on it, and then handed it back to them. Jimi was saying "Here, this is how it's done." Jimi was such a threat on so many levels. He was a threat as a guitarist. Jimi literally scared the shit out of everybody with his abilities. Clapton and Townsend who were'nt even friends, had to come together to discuss Jimi. Jeff Beck, who I always thought was the most talented English guitarist, actually considered quitting all together after seeing Jimi play live. Jimmy Page was probably the least honest by claiming that he NEVER even seen Jimi play live. Yeah right. By Page saying that, that was his way of sidestepping the whole "Oh my God, Hendrix is fantastic" praise the other English guitarists were heaping onto Jimi. All of Britain's rock royalty, The Beatles, The Stones, Brian Epstein, everybody, went to those early Hendrix shows. All others had at least seen Jimi once in his lifetime. Everyone except for Page. O.K. sailor, whatever you say. Clapton and Townsend always spoke on how "inadequate" Hendrix made them feel as guitarists. Jimi knew this and went in for the kill. Jimi's thing was "Ya'll have been taking from us (black folks) so now I'm going to take from you." Jimi did this by dressing like rock royalty. But the killer thing was that Jimi looked way better in ruffles than Townsend, Clapton and Page did. Jimi's impact on England was deep. This is for all of the Hendrixphiles like myself.

Ive always been more than a little bugged by Clapton's and Townsend's reactions to Hendrix.Most of the other popular brits at the time LOVED Jimi and his music, and didnt feel threatend by his abilities, or veiw him as competition...Clapton apparently got over it (eventually) but to date , Townsend still claims that Jimi "stole" some of his routine.... Townshend always seemed more awe-struck than hating . . .he conceded that Jimi topped him.
There's certainly a reason Jimi hit in Britain first, For the most part, all those British bands deified Black American musicians. And Jimi was the real thing. As the ultimate souvenir from a trip to the states, he was a fab business venture brought back to England by Chas Chandler of The Animals, (the band that tried the hardest to sound like honest-to-god american colored people, to a degree even moreso than those r&b impressarios The Rolling Stones), Hendrix kicked their asses (and blew they minds) and looked incredible doing it. If only to have been alive at that time, to have heard those impossible sounds being created, channeling from that magic man, appearing in this world for the very first time . . . Well, Hendrix DID take Pete's "destruction" thing. U know, the knocking over the speakers, smashing the guitar bit. Townsend was doing that before Jimi got to England. But, Jimi looked cooler doing it, didn't he? SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Chas saw Jimi in New York. Keith Richards girlfriend, Linda Keith, hipped Chas to Jimi and BEGGED him to come see Jimi play. When Chas did, Chas knew right then that Jimi would blow up in England. Chas was the one with the foresight and the means to make Jimi a superstar. All Jimi had to do was float and do his thing. Never has something been so perfectly laid out. It was like England had been waiting for Jimi and Chas knew that. The women had been waiting for a cat like Jimi, which caused some heavy ass tension among cats like Jagger and Clapton. Page has always said that he thought Hendrix was a genius.  None of the British guitarists of that time have said otherwise, to my knowledge. So what's your point? We all know that Jimi was the top. Why bash Page for never having seen him live? It's no question the Jimi "upset the apple-cart" in terms of the London scene, musically and socially.
As pali indicated, props to... 
...Chas Chandler for masterminding his marketing. The local stringers were shaken out of their comfort zones because the American music they were emulating (at least at the outset of their careers) was thrown back at them by an authentic American who'd actually played with those being idolized (Isley Brothers, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, King Curtis etc.). Being players themselves, they could not deny the level of musicianship Hendrix was bringing to the table. As to the threat he presented to them socially, outside of the comments they made publically, one can only wonder what was really going through their heads. Keith Richards for example... 
...as it was his girlfriend Linda Keith that got Chas Chandler interested in Hendrix. It's strange that since Brian Jones was one of his biggest boosters... 
...that Andrew Loog Oldham (Stones mgr. at the time) passed on the Hendrix opportunity. Eric Clapton...

I don't know of any organized plots to unseat the Invading King by any of the above, but it would have been an excercise in futility. Jimi just had too much talent and potential working for him at that point. Me, March 27. That's how The Audience and I got on this Aries thing in the first place, months ago.
