Um Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Blondie, Whitney Houston,Judy Garland,Julie Andrews and the great Bette Midler should have atleast got some votes. I'm suprised they weren't on there. I also am NOT a fan but suprised noone said Barbra Streisand. And as for Madonna she did things everyone told her not to do. She was very outspoken I think she was a good choice.

WHAT ABOUT BETTE! (LOL)

Madonna is the most overrated artist of all times...

The only reason why she's been successful through the years, is because she's the first to understand that sex and controversy sell.... She's a genius in marketing.

If we only talk about music (not about fashion, hype, style or controversy ), she has nothing... No voice, No talent, No skills....

She sucks so badly....

Putting on the same list Aretha Franklin and Madonna is a disgrace....

Madonna is in the same category as Britney, Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez or Ashley Simpson...

well, you said it yourself...understanding is one thing, making it work is another. Being an artist has as much to do with pleasing an audience as with making grade-A records. The best recording artists ever are most of the times people no-one has ever heard of,...you need the best of two worlds = madonna.

Joni Mitchell
Edith Piaf
June Carter
Dolly Parton
Carole King

Great list. thumbs up!

I'd substitue Mahalia Jackson for Dolly Parton myself as you've already got June Carter covering Country but no hard core Gospel representative.

Marian Anderson did record a few spiritual records but she's primarily a classical artist.

tA

I could live with "substitue Mahalia Jackson for Dolly Parton ". Also, no one has mentioned Sandy Denny, (maybe Joni's got that spot covered)

Anyway, in honor of Black History month:

1. How many people here know that Marian Anderson is the "Jackie Robinson" of classical music?

2. How many people here have listened to "Strange Fruit" and know what the meaning of the song is?
3. Who here had talent so great that musicians of every ethnic background ignored any societal "racial barrier" just to work with her?

PS: to all the Maddy-drones out there, Madonna's OK, but she's just not in the league of these giants. When all is said and done, she and her "proteges" are the Wonder Bread or the Miller Lite of music.
Open your ears, for God's sake - the world doesn't begin and end with the likes of Britney, Beyonce, Kylie, and Jessica Simpson

That's a cool list, man. But although they're damn fine vocalists/writers I wouldn't agree that they're all amongst the most influential.

55 top 5 hits... most of which she co-wrote and co-produced, but she has no talent.

most of which had no controversy attached to them.

most of which stand the test of time

but she has no talent.

The World must be stupid if they bought the hype of Madonna for 23 years. Didn't the Chevy Nova and Yugo go bust just after a year and the Dorian as well because it couldn't live up to the hype? how does Maddy do it? can she sell that?

Hi wave (remember lol)
Sorry , but i just don't see what's so special about her music
I like some songs of her like "Like a prayer" , "Borderline" , etc
but usually she doesn't convey any emotion to me , it's too plastic
She hasn't got a good voice either and she lipsynchs in concerts shake , FAKE
I'm not denying she's talented , but surely not as talented as let's say Carole King
Btw , making hits doesn't make a good artist
Every crappy R'NB artist can make a hit nowadays

Virgin Tour was all live... it's all off key and flat

Who's That Girl was all live all off and flat

Blonde Ambtion all was live except Now I'm Following You... backing tracks used on Express Yourself Where's the Party Into the Groove Vogue. most of the audio i have has her voice really streched thin because of the throat alliment she had most of the tour.

Girlie Show all was live expect Erotica Vogue and Justify My Love
.

Drowned World all was live

Re-Invention all was live with some debate still on Nobody Knows Me.

she sings live more than the Jacksons... and she's pretty good at it.

and i have all the audio for the tours. i'll let you have them to prove my point.

Bassist Mike Watt currently working with The Stooges gave an interview to Neumu online. He talks about his experience at Slane Castle back in August 2004, opening for Madonna's reInvention show.

"I've learned a lot from [The Stooges]. I did a bunch of gigs with them this summer. Like last week, I opened for Madonna at a castle in Ireland [laughing]. She was intense. She's only six months, eight months younger than me. She was singing and dancing. She was great, and so in control of the situation, running the whole thing but being the star of the thing. It was bizarre; she's not a hand puppet, that's for sure. She's incredible.

I wanted to talk to her but I didn't want to force myself. I was standing there with my mouth open the whole time. I watched her sound check and I watched her gig. She talked a little to Iggy. She goes, "So, is that what you're gonna wear onstage?" You know, just jeans and boots. He goes, "Yeah," and she goes, "Woah." She was really singing and playing, she played guitar a little, it was amazing. All of us we were watching it, she's a real deal. She does do the work, man, and that's admirable. "

Watt's latest solo recording, The Secondman's Middle Stand, released in 2004 , is an operatic piece that tells his experience of enduring and surviving the sickness in three parts, inspired by and paralleling Dante's Divine Comedy: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise (the sickness, healing and surviving).

What a joke.... lol lol lol
First of all if you want to campare her to someone, compare her to a lipsyncher (Britney, Ashley Simpson, Milli Vanilli...)

She sucks...

If she wasn't there, there will be no Britney, no Jenifer Lopez, no Ashley Simpson...

It would be so great....

Hmm, well, when Madonna does something like the HIStory tour where she lipsynchs everything except for a couple of stupid adlibs and grunts, then I'll compare her to a Jackson. When Madonna does awards shows like the Grammys (circa Man in the Mirror) and lipsynchs the song, then I'll compare her to a Jackson. When the live performance that Madonna is most known for (ie: Motown 25) is lipsynched, then I'll compare her to a Jackson. Until then, though, I'll take her flat, stretched, beat live voice any day over a Memorex tape.
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
