Every Kind Of People/What's Goin' On Has there ever been a song that was more heavily "influenced" from another song than Robert Palmer's "Every Kind Of People" was by Marvin's "What's Goin' On"? Basically, "Every Kind Of People" is a full on tribute to "What's Goin' On". Released in 75, it was only 4 years after "What's Goin' On". It's a very good song, great bass line, catchy hook. It would have been an excellent song if "What's Goin On" didn't exist. But "Every Kind Of People" wouldn't have existed if it hadn't been for "What's Goin On". In parts of the song, Robert actually imitates Marvin's singing. Robert's vocal phrasing is Marvin. Even the "oooohooos" and the double tracked vocals are high point elements from "What's Goin On". I remember when I was little, seeing Robert perform this song on "American Bandstand". Right out the gate, Dick Clark told Robert that this song is very Marvin Gaye and that he must have been influenced by Marvin. Robert didn't try to deny and said that Marvin was definately his favorite singer. Anybody else like "Every Kind Of People"? I love it. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz.
