Yeah, you're right. It's hard to keep the list down to 10.

I think Kate's great, but I don't think she has had an astounding influence on modern music beyond Tori Amos and a few others. The music of Joni Mitchell seems much more influential to me. nod

I was going to say R kelly has to be on this list. You hear his influence in most of the R&B we have today. Most sounds like crap but that's not the point. He did influence it.

You hit the nail on the head there, u may not like them but their success is probably responsible for labels to sign up act like "Britney" and Destiny Child (the ghetto spice girls, Destiny's Child are kind of like spice girls on welfare, "can u pay my bills scrubs?") and the reason why there are so many bad pop acts.

Destiny's Child were practicing in their basement while those girls were doing god knows what. The major difference is that Destiny's Child has chops, the spice girls didn't. The Spice girls are a female version of Take That, Take That is a copy of an older formula. The spice girl success is directly attributed to the success of take that.

And Take That's success follows the template used for every boyband since The Monkees, so it could be argued that the boyband phenomenon really started with The Monkees.

Pop Darwinism.

I don't believe you. Please explain. R Kelly is a magpie, not a pioneer. His records are either copies or pastiches of existing genres. His success made it acceptable for record companies to swamp the market with identikit product, which means that he's more about marketing than music.

Say what you will about The Spice Girls (And Hanson for that matter) but teen pop meant a lot more when they initially ushered it in again in the late 90's as opposed to when it denigrated into the Backstreet Boy-NSYNC-Britney Spears-Jessicsa Simpson abyss. Spice Girls had a nice R&B base to their music. Sassy spirit (you're right DC3 is ghetto spice) and sense of fun made them. Hanson are like Dylan compared to their BSB Nysce brethren. What happened in that short period of time?
