Apart from Billy Joel and Elton John I think those are all pretty good choices (nothing against either of them I just don't think they necessarily belong in the top ten), and actually I think Prince would probably not be in the top ten either. My picks for the ten most influential artists/bands/acts of the rock n roll era are

B.B. King
Little Richard
Chuck Berry
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Ray Charles
James Brown
Miles Davis
Stevie Wonder

To the ones allready mentioned I would add:

Elvis
Queen
Michael jackson
David Bowie
The velvet underground
Chet Atkins

These are maybe a bit too recent to tell how influential they''l be in 20 years but for now:
* Trent Reznor
* Jeff Buckley
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Actually Prince has more impact on today's artists than all of these guys except maybe The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown. I'd have to eliminate the Stones-- what've they really contributed musically? Elton John I'm on the fence with and I'd say no to B.B. King and Billy Joel. We're talking influential and not favorite or most critically acclaimed. I'm probably biased a bit towards Miles and Dylan. I'd like to think they've been influential, but I don't hear it in the music that often unfortunately. I'd keep them anyway. wink Frank and the King stay as does of Chuck Berry.

So who do we have here?
Miles
The Beatles
Chuck Berry
Jimi Hendrix (can't forget him)
Elvis
Sinatra
James Brown
Prince
MJ
Stevie/Dylan

Like it or not, MJ has to be up there too. Damn I guess Dylan isn't on the list. Actually I'm gonna put him in a tie with Stevie. Depending on the music you listen to I imagine that they're about the same. I personally just don't hear enough of his influence today. I had to include some of the pioneers- Beatles, J.B., Miles, Chuck Berry-- the icons-- Elvis, Frank, and MJ-- as well as the best embodiments of the various types of music to date-- Stevie, Dylan, Prince, and Jimi.

I have to disagree with your exclusion of B.B. King. BB may very well be the most important electric guitar player of the twentieth century and probably one of if not THE reason that the blues has remained popular throughout the age of rock n roll. Plus his style was a huge influence on both early rock n roll, and on blues-revisionist rock n roll that gave birth to psychedelia, funk, hard rock and heavy metal.

This is the best list I have seen so far. I have to agree but I would like to somehow squeeze Prince's name in there somewhere.
I have one question: Who has Sammy Davis, Jr. and Velvet Underground influenced musically other than the people who mentioned them earlier?
