It's no question the Jimi "upset the apple-cart" in terms of the London scene, musically and socially.

As pali indicated, props to...

...Chas Chandler for masterminding his marketing.

The local stringers were shaken out of their comfort zones because the American music they were emulating (at least at the outset of their careers) was thrown back at them by an authentic American who'd actually played with those being idolized (Isley Brothers, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, King Curtis etc.).

Being players themselves, they could not deny the level of musicianship Hendrix was bringing to the table. As to the threat he presented to them socially, outside of the comments they made publically, one can only wonder what was really going through their heads.

Keith Richards for example...

...as it was his girlfriend Linda Keith that got Chas Chandler interested in Hendrix.

It's strange that since Brian Jones was one of his biggest boosters...

...that Andrew Loog Oldham (Stones mgr. at the time) passed on the Hendrix opportunity.

Eric Clapton...

...patterned his look while a member of Cream after Jimi (check the fro).

Pete Townsend, not really known as a lead guitarist...

...built his rep off of chords and songs.

Hendrix adopting the "destruction" thing, may have been based on the Monterey Pop discussion on who would follow who (or The Who). As the story goes, Hendrix warned him that if he had to follow them...

...be prepared for a "no holds barred" performance.

Paul McCartney...

...was said to have been the one that suggested to the Monterey Pop promoters to have Hendrix there.
His former wife Linda Eastman took many pics of Jimi during her photography days.

From a pure musicianship point of view, although he may have wanted to quit the 1st time he saw Hendrix, Jeff Beck...

...advanced the furthest as a player. (Haven't run across a pic of him and Jimi, yet)

Probably to greatest tension socially was between Hendrix...

...and Mick Jagger when they played the "you take my girlfriend and i'll take yours" game between Marianne Faithful(?) and Devon Wilson.

Regarding is position as the one setting the trend for fashion, well, pictures speak louder than words.

And last but not least, a conservative Hendrix...

I don't know of any organized plots to unseat the Invading King by any of the above, but it would have been an excercise in futility. Jimi just had too much talent and potential working for him at that point.

If they had been foolish enough to attempt something like that, in the words of funk philosopher George Clinton they would have had to eventually...

Wake up to the coverup and uncover what's up. Yo whassup?

tA on point as usual!! clapping

quickly scanned the thread (besides theAudience's post smile ) But, yeah, I remember reading (I'm thinking it was in Mojo) that the Brits feel they are responisible for Hendrix's sound and if it wasn't for their influence, Hendrix wouldn't have concieved the experience that we're still feeling the aftershocks of today. From what I read, they feel Mitchell and Redding had an equal part in the creation of The experience's sound.

Also, I've read things on the net saying that Clapton wasn't intimidated by Hendrix technically, but by his showmanship. Whatever. neutral

If only Jimi would've lived longer, sure he could've just been a flash. I doubt it. If only he could've made it to that meeting with Miles Davis now that wouldn've been a beautiful thing! Whenever, I think of Hendrix playing on Bitches Brew I get the feeling that might've been one of the most magical adventures in sound.
