maybe this is keeping it TOO real, but have you checked out the master musicians of joujouka?

http://www.jajouka.com/

brian jones recorded an album of them in the '60s, and william burroughs wrote about them, singing their praises. it's some pretty incredible, hypnotic, intense music - and very beautiful as well.

Tomorrow Never Knows

Turn off your mind, relax
and float down stream
It is not dying
It is not dying

Lay down all thought
Surrender to the void
It is shining
It is shining

That you may see
The meaning of within
It is being
It is being

That love is all
And love is everyone
It is knowing
It is knowing

That ignorance and hate
May mourn the dead
It is believing
It is believing

But listen to the
color of your dreams
It is not living
It is not living

Or play the game
existence to the end
Of the beginning
Of the beginning
Of the beginning
Of the beginning
Of the beginning
Of the beginning

beyond the shankar disc i recommended, you might wanna also go on amazon.com (or half.com if you're feeling thrifty) and do a search for "rough guide to" in the popular music section...there are lots of compilation albums in the "rough guide" series that are pretty top notch in my book. they're good stepping-off points if you're curious about a certain kind of music, and the liner notes are typically pretty informative and extensive. i plan on getting "a rough guide to morocco" next. nod

Miles

Ravi Shankar ain't 'Arabian' music! He's Indian! A whole different thang. Try the band Radio Tarifa, a fantastic blend of medieval Spanish/ Morrocan music with electric guitar and other 'world music' influences.. Their stuff is available from all good record stores. There's also the brilliant violinist Simon Shaheen - while not 'traditional' Arab music, it's a powerful mix of Palestinian music and jazz. And avoid 'Arab chill out' compilations like the plague!

Arabic Chillout

The two-disc set Arabic Chillout is a collection of electronica tracks that are significantly influenced by Arabic sounds and rhythms. This compilation blends the two musical genres in a way that remains faithful to both the Arabic world music genre and the “chillout” genre of mellow electronica. Included on the set are tracks from the Thievery Corporation, Radar, Al-pha X, and Dub Corporation.

Look for an Israeli group called "Ha'Breira Ha'Tivit" (Natural gathering), led by a Moroccan drummer/singer named Shlomo Bar. They blend traditional north african, middle eastern, spanish guitar, sitar, etc. into a very unique sound.

Probably, anything you find by them is good, especially a recent album called "Wanderings" (I think); it's got a brownish cover with doodles in an ancient script.

Try downloads or www.calabash.com or www.shlomobar.com
