Ani and Meshell are two of the most relevant recording artists out there. And I don't use the word "artist" lightly.
I have about 7 or 8 of Ani's albums. She's bloody brilliant. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Yeah, I really like her stuff so far, I have her live double cd set 'Living In Clip' which was kinda my introduction to her and I knew she was a real musician, so I wanted to hear what her concerts were like.
That set was a great intro to her stuff. The truth she tells is so real and raw it will make one shudder compared to the pop fluff we hear on the radio most of the time. I also have the one she did where Prince has a cut on it. Also on Dial Maceo she does a song, Ani is soulful! And has good rhythm too! She is what I'd call a musical revolutionary. She has a lot of courage to speak out on the types of issues she addresses. I like her voice and style and guitar playing too! peace!

I discovered Ani for the first time maybe 2 years ago on some Hard Rock Live show. Something about her performance that just weirded me out at first. Maybe her casual, "hmm ugh, I messed up...let me start over" kind of attitude as she did on one of the songs she began to play. It was a something that I didn't like. I realize now that I was just going through a detox. I was getting all the SHIT (with the exception of a tiny few) that I've been hearing in the last 5-10 years, out of my system and have actually stumbled upon real music with real SUBSTANCE. My first album was UP,UP,UP and it was here where I really discovered her. She has a talent that cannot be matched. Me? Listening to a FOLK singer and actually liking it? Nah. Just another indication of greatness....someone who opens the door to a whole new world and lets you travel through and enjoy spaces you never thought you would go.

One of the best things about the npg audio was discovering Ani's music.

i discovered ani in 1996, just after "dilate" came out. i used to have a dealer who didn't play that in and out shit. you had to hang out in his house for at least a half an hour when you came to get weed. he always had his cd changer filled with ani. i was immediately turned on. in a world of increasingly commercial and manufactured music, where you can't even count on prince to put out a good album anymore, ani difranco is the only real artist today. i don't believe anyone could seriously say prince is following ani's example. my band is following ani's example. she put it out there, in a real underground, grassroots way, starting from a 2 person operation to where righteous babe records is now, 13 years later. it's not like prince can really start over now. it's been too long, and even if the general public doesn't care what he's doing, he cannot escape the fact that he is still prince, and all the baggage that goes along with that. "providence" is fucking amazing.
luv, alx Keep your headphones on.

Ani is the best. I think her chest tatoo is the coolest. I read a great review of Living in Clip in Rolling Stone, and a few days later saw a cool picture of her with braids, and got curious. It is one of the best CDs I own. And she is great live - my husband, who hates Folk music, even had to admit that she puts on a damn good show.

She has covered Prince songs live as well - When You Were Mine & When DOves Cry both spring top mind. Did a pretty good job too. Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.

My girlfriend is a HUGE Ani fan...She turned me on 2 Ani. I'm not 2 crazy about her older stuff, but since she met Princie-Pooh, she has learned how 2 funk! By the way, I'm taking my girl 2 her first Prince show on Monday! Occupy Alphabet Street!

i think she writes wonderfully but i don't particularly like her voice. "Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean someone ain't following me."

I think Ani is a very honest woman and artist, true to herself. That sounds through in her music and I like it a lot. But unfortunately I don't think that Prince mirrror her that much in everything... Since Ani simply puts her cd's out there on the internet for a reasonable price for anybody to buy... Prince needs an exclusive club where he gets to say everything and the member can't expect anything besides 4 cd's for 25$ a piece... Not that I don't like all the member perks like concerts soundchecks and afterparties ... but the problem with that is that people outside of the US can't enjoy that perk, unless they are willing to pay for an airplane ticket... then of course 100 bucks doesn't matter anymore... but you still want the music... see? In all honesty I have concluded that Prince has definitely something to learn from Ani. - You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

I first saw Ani on that live PBS show West on 57th (or something like that) back in 1996 or 1997. She was promoting "Living in Clip". I'd heard of her before but I never bothered to check out her albums.
At that time she was still doing mostly folk music and it didn't catch my ear initially. Fast forward to when To The Teeth came out. I heard Prince was on the album, and honestly just bought it to hear that song. The whole album is excellent. Since then I've purchased serveral of her other albums, Up,Up,Up,Up,Up being my favorite right behind To the Teeth. Ani Rules! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later. -Miles Davis-
