After being thwarted in a suicide attempt in a London hotel room, R&B singer Houston reportedly gouged his own eye out.

According to sources close to the singer, on Thursday Houston attempted to jump out of a hotel window but was stopped by
his security personnel. He was then locked in his hotel room, where he injured himself. There are currently no further details on the incident, although photographs of his injury are circulating online.

The Los Angeles native, born Houston Summers IV, was overseas for a series of performances when the incident occurred. He scored a hit last year with the Chingy and Nate Dogg-featured "I Like That" (see "Houston Scores Club Hit With Help From Chingy, Nate Dogg"), which was also featured in a McDonald's commercial. His debut album, It's Already Written, was certified gold a month after its release in August of last year.

Representatives for Houston's label, Capitol Records, could not be reached for comment.

R&B singer Houston, whose full name is Houston Summers IV, reportedly gouged out one of his eyes after a failed suicide attempt in a London hotel. MTV.com reports that last Thursday (January 27), the singer attempted to commit suicide by jumping off of the hotel balcony but was stopped by his security team. Houston then locked himself into a bathroom and gouged one of his eyes out. The singer was in Europe for a string of performances.

Details are still sketchy but on Wednesday (February 2), the singer's label, Capitol Records, released the following statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston during this tragic time."

The Los Angeles-based singer released his debut album, It's Already Written, last August. The set was certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies and featured the hit, "I Like That" featuring Chingy, Nate Dogg, and I-20.

When LAUNCH spoke to the singer last year, he explained that singing was in his blood. He said: "Been singing all my life. Pops is a singer, I'm the Fourth. You know he's Houston Summers the Third. You know he used to sing with Marvin Gaye back in the day. He used to do those background vocals. He was on the radio, so it's basically in my blood. Music is what I thirst for you know as well as God."

I may not listen to his music much but I am shocked by how horrible this incident is. I can't imagine what his situation is but if it's this serious all I can hope for is that he gets help, seriously. What possible demons in his life or horrors could he have been going through to reach this point? His record company needs to get him some treatment, it's possible he may try it again.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston during this tragic time," a Capitol Records spokesperson said.

Los Angeles radio station KKBT-FM's K-Sly, who appeared in the "I Like That" video and is close to Houston's camp, said the singer had been under psychiatric care last year for manic depression. Another source corroborated that claim, adding that Houston had also struggled with PCP.

"I was told he wanted to commit suicide and stabbed his eye out," K-Sly said. "He was telling people he was Jesus and wanted to go home to his Father."

The singer is now back in Los Angeles.

Phencyclidine (PCP) was developed in the 1950s as an intravenous anesthetic but, due to the side effects of confusion and delirium, its development for human medical use was discontinued.

Numbness of the extremities, slurred speech, and loss of coordination may be accompanied by a sense of strength and invulnerability. A blank stare, rapid and involuntary eye movements, and an exaggerated gait are among the more observable effects. Auditory hallucinations, image distortion, severe mood disorders, and amnesia may also occur. In some users, PCP may cause acute anxiety and a feeling of impending doom; in others, paranoia and violent hostility, and in some, it may produce a psychoses indistinguishable from schizophrenia. Many believe PCP to be one of the most dangerous drugs of abuse.

Physiological effects of PCP include a slight increase in breathing rate and a more pronounced rise in blood pressure and pulse rate. Respiration becomes shallow, and flushing and profuse sweating.

At high doses of PCP, there is a drop in blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration. This may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, flicking up and down of the eyes, drooling, loss of balance, and dizziness. High doses of PCP can also cause seizures, coma, and death (though death more often results from accidental injury or suicide during PCP intoxication). Psychological effects at high doses include illusions and hallucinations.
