The Experience or Band Of Gypsies

We know that Jimi was/is the man. He could have had Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and Miss Piggy as his band, and still destroyed everybody else. But, who was your favorite Hendrix line up, The Experience or Band of Gypsies? Miles Davis said he favored the latter.

The Band Of Gypsies...

...had the potential to be my pick if Jimi had stayed on the planet longer.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience...

...is my choice because that's where the bulk of the great material lies.

...its hard, 'cause on one hand, Mitch had the "rock meets Elvin Jones" thing workin', and Buddy Miles had the Funk n Soul-meets-John Bonham-kinda thang...,so it's hard to choose...

But, I think that, like Foley, I might go with the combination of the two: Mitch Mitchell on drums, and Billy Cox on Bass...I kinda liked that line up...

The Gypsies.....
Way funkier than The Experience.....
If they kept it going & expanded,
they probably would've gave Funkadelic a
run for there money.....

As a kid, when I first really got into Hendrix, I ADORED his first 3 albums, especially Are You Experienced? That by far, is my fave Hendrix album, still to this day. As I got into my early teens, and became more hip, I started to lean towards Band of Gypsies. Not because of the lineup. Buddy's vocals got on my nerves. But because of the material Jimi was writing then. I could see how Funkadelic based their whole sound on what Jimi and Sly was doing. I too, love Mitch Mitchell. He definately gave Jimi so much to work with. Never was crazy about Noel's bass playing. Jimi played the lion share of the bass parts anyway. I always felt Noel was there cuz he could get his hair into an afro. Billy Cox knew Jimi long before Jimi got big, so he fit Jimi, even with Mitch. But, I definately pick Jimi's first line up. Jimi's material, the band's image, that's what broke Jimi wide open to the world.

Yeah, regarding the Buddy Miles "rooster calls", why didn't they just edit that shit out? I know Jimi and co. weren't pleased about having to give Ed Chalpin anything, but Jimi's name was still going to be on it...If it's true that the vocals bugged Jimi too, why didn't they just cut that part out later, in the studio? Jimi wasn't even onstage at that point, he was changing his busted string....just wondering....

I agree with you.The Second Expirience line up was the best.Mitchell was a better drummer than Buddy Miles for the most part, tho Miles wasnt bad.Cox was definitely a better bass player for Jimi than Redding. It isn't that Redding wasnt good because he was....but Cox was more sympathetic to what Jimi was doing at any given time and had alot more expirience as a bassist. At the end of the day , Redding was a frustrated guitarist who really wanted to get his own thing going and took the bass job initially because it was a chance to work with Chas Chandler....

Early Funkadelic based their whole sound on Hendrix and Sly. They would have gotten swept up under a rug somewhere trying to fuck with the Band of Gypsies. Hazel wouldn't have even walked into a room carrying a guitar if Hendrix was in there.
