Jam Of The Day: Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Computer Games"

Who remembers this jam? It was a disco type jam with an asian feel to it. It started out with a long intro in an arcade that kept adding more and more computer games until the drums kicked in and then the music.

It was a definate ass shaker in the skating rinks back in the day.

I swear this track is also known as "Firecracker" but they each have a slightly different intro of colliding arcade noises (and things that sound like old cell phones lol even though that couldn't be).

Good ear! A lot of the noises at the beginning and ending of "Computer Games" sound very similar to the firecrackers in Mass Production's "Firecracker". I always like to play "Firecracker" directly after "Computer Games". biggrin

Is that where the music drops out and there is just drum programmin? I reckon there are still some percussive synth bits in it.

That's about where you could segue in another song but it's only like 4 bars long.

Yeah, It seems that it had the two different names, depending on whether or not your copy is from Japan, or the US....Incidentally, YMO was:

Ryuichi Sakamoto (of " The Last Emperor" and "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence": Piano, Keyboards, Computers, vocals

Yukihiro Takahashi: Drums, keyboards, vocals

Harumi Hosono: Bass, keyboards, background vocals

The SOS Band's "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" mixes OK with it but the break in "Computer Games" is just so damn short. Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" does pretty good too. That short break just gets on my nerves so I usually wait till the end and blend in the ending sound effects with the opening firecrackers of Mass Production's "Firecracker". biggrin
