remy shand the next prince?

Wzup y'all... i just picked up the CD 'the way i feel' by Remy Shand. It is some pretty funky and mellow stuff. The thing that struck me the most was that the album was 'written, arranged, produced, performed, and mixed by Remy Shand'. Could this be the next Prince? It's reminiscent of maxwell's first album... laid back old skool style. Not a lot of people know bout this guy even tho he's on motown. The stores round here sell the cd for only $9.99.. so if u ain broke go cop yoself a copy. For those that heard the album.. what y'all think?

Remy Shand is the Teena Marie of our generation -- he is tres cool. Multi-talented like Prince, with the feel of Isaac Hayes and a falsetto reminscient of Al Green. Ya'll need to peep this!

I was excited when I saw his video so I peeped out his website and listened to some of his upcoming tracks. First of all, he is from Canada(enough said there). We must remember, what sets Prince apart from everone else is his ablility to create beautiful music. Remy's stuff is not that tight. It is very clear that his is very commercial and not Raw. I was not impressed.

I would hold off any substanative opinions unitil we see him live. Can he master those instuments like Prince. Can he move a crowd like Prince. Lets wait and see.

Saying Remy Shand is the next Prince is like when people were calling Jamiroquai the next Stevie Wonder. Of course, the most ridiculous version of this I heard was when SPIN magazine called Princess Superstar the next Eminem. HUH?

Yeah, Remy sounds a lot like Prince (by way of D'Angelo). When Remy starts sounding like Remy, then he'll be the next whatever he is.

Prince has pieces of Sly, James Brown, Hendrix, Santana, etc., but when he came on the scene, he wasn't an obvious derivative of any one of his influences. Hopefully we'll see that kind of diversity of influences from Mr. Shand.

I agree this guy is cool. Still, I think its funny when artist list every single kind of instrument, I mean saying you played all the analog synthesizers, electric piano, acoustic piano, clavinet, organ, rhodes, wurlitzer ...couldnt you just say "I played all keys? It seems like thats stuffs all padding to make it seem more impressive. I always felt like Lenny K was guilty of this as well.

Didn't mean to come off like an insta-naysayer-cynic, and sorry if I did. I intend on checking out his album, if not by purchasing it myself, then by waiting for my other-half to buy a copy, since he seems to be feeling the whole Remy thing more than I am.

I'm impressed with the song currently getting MTV2 play, but I wish I'd heard the song without having to see the video - he comes off like a bit of a smug bitch, and I wind up not WANTING to like him. Silly, I know...

This is his first album. Prince relased (3) albums before he got props and the instruments were a lot more diffucult to master. You can make a quality album in a closet with all of the needed instruments. Remy benefits from todays technology. He still has a lot to prove, particularly live on stage. His music is simple and easy to play. Can he play a bassline like "777 9311" or "Lady Cab driver" or "The walk" or "Im yours"...I doubt it. Dont fall for the record company Commercialism ! To me, there is nooo comparison.

I saw the video too, and to be honest my first thoughts were, "Is this s joke? A white guy trying to do the Neo-Soul Thing? And they even theu in a Donny Hathaway lookalike to give it validation?"

I also wondered is he really playing all those instruments or what?

And my third thought was , here is the corporate world now trying to follow whats already been started woth a "industry act" as oppossed to finding a black artist who is for real.

Just my 1st thoughts cuz I'm learning how the industry does things.

If he really is for real then I stand corrected, but until I hear him play live I'm holding my stamp of approval!

Peace!

LOL exactly.."industry act" I wish I could have coined that phrase. Another interesting thing is, remember one of Prince's first videos, "I wanna be Your lover"? Prince was featured playing all of the instruments. Now, we have Remy Shand doing the same thing. Im sure that was not just a coincidence. Prince is Raw ! He came from the dirt mannnn! I might steal you phrase, "industry act" for a group discussion, but you are right on the money. Thank God there are still some of us still around that get the big picture.

ok.. so what if most of his instrumental skills are simple? This is the guy's first album.... took him 4 years to make. (started since he was 19 and now he's 23) Who would have thought prince would have been what he is today when he came out with 'FOR YOU'? Maybe Remy will blow up by the time his 'Purple Rain' comes out or maybe he'll be a forgotten talent soon. So we'll just have to wait and see.

Yep, thats my whole point, we will have to wait and see. I would buy a ticket to his concert see what he's got. But if he aint got it, thats it for meee..There are too many Prince wanna be's walkin around, Beck, D angelo, etc. Remy, however is one to watch. I just wasnt impressed wtih what I heard thus far. Raphael Sadiq, who is also multi instrument talented, would blow him out of the water.Sadiq would be my example of what im trying to say about someone, other than Prince, that has "it". A Non-industry act. Check out a Lucy Pearl show

I'm finally hearing "Take a Message for My Love" in its entirety. At first he sounds like a bootleg Jay Kay (Jamiroquai). Then he sounds like a bootleg Prince. So, to answer your q, I'd have to say....nope! I'll say one good thing about him though, atleast he plays real instruments and not computers in the shape of instruments!

remy is not the next noone. he sounds exactly like lewis taylor who is a soul singer from england. lewis is a big marvin gaye fan, something that you can hear in his vocals but remy sounds like he is doing lewis who is doing marvin. download some lewis taylor and see what i mean.

also, i dont mean to burst anyones bubble, but remy cannot sing. his voice is not good at all. it seems that he is going to be marketed as yet another great white hype, which wouldnt matter to me if his music was that great, but to me it isnt. he is a soul imposter!

Well that does that. Remy Shands album reached #39 on the charts. Thats as high as he has gotten. Last time I checked, he was #79 and moving down rapidly. That doesnt mean that the album is not good, nor does it mean that he is not talented. I purchased the album and the music is good. Its just that when people prematurely pump up and act before the act proves him/herself, these kinds of bombs occur. It would have been better if he came out of nowhere, likeeeee Prince. I hope Remy didnt take too much of an advance for this first album.

My demo "ComeBlack"....coming soon.

Cody Chesnutt is being compared to Prince.

Checkout www.codychesnutt.com

You can hear his song "Look Good in Leather" @ MTV.com. Here is a direct link. http://www.mtv.com/search...ce=default

I have not heard anything else other than that song. But that song sounds to me as if it could have been on the Dirty Mind album. Simple and raw. Even the delivery reminds me of Prince. His first album comes out in a couple of weeks and it is a 2 disk set on which he plays every instrument other than sax I believe.

Also, I will say it again, the new Cee Lo Green album has some serious funk on it. Closes Freak, Getting Grown, Country Love, Suga Baby and especially Under the Infulence(follow me), have tons of Prince flavor in my opinion. You can get those songs all over the internet. I am really impressed with his album. It hits the stores in a couple of weeks also. He says that his album is a tribute to his influences and to me it is obvious that Prince is one of them.

This is an article on Cee Lo. Sorry, I did not mean to get off topic.

This is just my opinion. I wonder what you guys think.

Remy Shand sounds like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and various other old soul singers. He lacks originality, and more than that his songs lack the type of hooks that made the material of the original artists so timeless.

Remy Shand will be forgotten within a year.
