Probably the single most underrated musician of all-time. It really is a shame that he's not more well-known than he is, especially considering the tons of people he's influenced. He influenced the Rolling Stones for crying out loud. And how many of their contemporaries (especially white ones) can lay claim to that?

I'd have died to see him. Solo, Flying Burrito Brothers, Byrds, International Submarine Band. Whatever.

I am in complete agreement. I wish someone would do a good biopic about Parsons and get his name out there again. There was a movie released last year, "Grand Theft Parsons," about the infamous story (to Parsons fans) surrounding his death and the theft of his body, starring Johnny Knoxville. I have it in my NetFlix queue now.

In fact, today, I purchased tickets to the 6th Annual Sleepless Nights Gram Parsons Tribute concert at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall on March 5. I have gone the last two years and it is a blast. http://www.musichallsf.co...30505.html

I can't wait for this year's show.

BTW - I love the scene in Almost Famous when the William Miller character is walking through the hall of the Riot Hyatt on the Sunset Strip looking for Stillwater's suite and looks into a hotel room with the door open. Sitting on the bed with a guitar is an actor portraying Parsons, who is singing with an actress portraying Emmylou Harris. The best part is there are no words exchanged, just a cenimatic tip of the hat to this great talent.
[Edited 2/4/05 18:44pm]

I love "Almost Famous" and I vaguely recall that scene. hmmm Although the moment would have been lost on me as I had no idea to whom it was referring. I'll have to watch it again. nod Love that movie. love

Parsons was extremely influential on the Stones during the recordings of "Let it Bleed," "Sticky Fingers," and "Exile on Main Street." In fact, the Flying Burrito Brothers recorded and released "Wild Horses" before the Stones, but of course, it flopped. And the Stones, with an almost identical arrangement, had a huge hit with it. shrug

It's a jungle out there.

I keep hearing about the Flying Burrito Brothers, but I have yet to get anything by them. Damn, I even know exactly what they look like from seeing so many pics of them floating about on the internet and in books, and I keep seeing old vintage posters from their gigs back in the day.

Edit to say that I didn't even know that about "Wild Horses". eek I LOVE The Stones version. Now I have to hear the original.

I don't know which version I like better. Mick Jagger sings the hell out of it, but there's a certain loneliness in Gram's voice that's just unbeatable. I couldn't pick a favorite. Cause it tears me up when Gram says, "But I don't have much time." Something about the way his voice cracks. And in the 3rd chorus, when Mick says "We'll ride them someday" without the background voices, that also tears me up.

Stax just sent me an MP3 of the original version. thumbs up! Thanks Stax! Anyway, I'm really loving it. It's a bit more country, and I love the piano towards the end. It's hard to pick a favorite because it's one of my favorite songs, and they're both great. It may very well be though that it's the first time I'll ever say that I think Mick's voice is actually better than the original. lol There is a real sadness in Gram's voice though, and the song seems to be a tiny bit slower than the Stones version.

Anyway, it's such a beautiful song that I'll take either version. nod

I know what you both mean, it is a tough call for me too. I agree, WH it one of Mick's better vocal performances. I also like the arrangement of the Stones version a bit better (i.e., the rythym secetion coming in on the chorus and dropping out for the verses on the first half of the song). But I LOVE the peddal steel work in the Flying Burritos version, as well as the piano. Although I do like Grams plaintive take on the song, its not his strongest vocal outing, all in all.

The 1999 tour featuring Prince, The Time & Vanity 6.

Yep, I was there. And Bobby Z got me tickets.nana just kidding (but not about the Bobby Z part)

I researched this tour in The Vault and it said that the NYC stop on the tour was one of those times where The Time was mysteriously dropped from the lineup (so that they wouldn't overshadow Prince most likely). So even if I was a Prince fan back then and went to this tour, I still wouldn't have seen the complete show. That sucks.

I vaguely remember the Time. (I was pretty young then) But I remember Vanity 6 much more clearly and Prince shirtless, simulating sex on a bed that rose up out of the stage. Also, my next door neighbor Bobby Z was on stage, so that was cool for me as young teen. I did see the Time last year open for Prince in Oakland.

The thing I remember most about it was the scene. It seemed like every black person in Minnesota was there and they dressed to the nines!!!! We're talking outrageous polka dot dresses, large hats, long gloves, heels -- ultra glamour!!! It just blew my mind. Me and my friend felt like utter shmoes in our stupid sweatshirts. I don't think people go to concerts with that attitude anymore.

Don't underestimate the power of Mick Jagger. I think he's extremely underrated as a vocalist. Although, you're right, he does have a tendency to cover artists that tower above him vocally (Solomon Burke, Marvin Gaye, the Temps, Otis Redding, etc.).

But Gram is kinda like Mick in the fact that he's not a golden throated singer, like the others mentioned. The beauty lies less in the actual voice and more in the way he uses it. And I think it may be an acquired taste for some people. If you want, I can tell you some great songs to test the waters with. biggrin

Yeah, you're right about him covering better vocalists than himself. I would never put Mick up there with any of the best vocalists, but I would put him up there as one of the best frontmen in rock. nod

I have no problem with someone's voice being less than stellar, if they have great music to back it up. In fact, most of my favorite bands don't have what you would call "perfect" vocalists. In fact, some might say they are downright annoying. lol Mick's voice is an acquired taste I suppose. But that goes for a lot of other vocalists as well.

I used the word "vocalist" too much and now I'm sick of it. confused

I'm not commenting on the rest of it. lol

And I'm going to add a man that I haven't seen anybody list yet.

I just "discovered" Jeff Buckley like two weeks ago and I can't get enough of "Grace". worship I even started a thread about it last week, I was so blown away. You're right. I can only imagine what it would have been like to see him live.
