Stereolab Geeks Unite: Making A Best Of! 
I'm gonna put together a compilation of the best songs from Stereolab for a comp CD to play at work and to share with someone who likes 'em but doesn't know much about 'em. Even though it's sometimes hard to match the titles with the melodies, here's the list I have so far: Metronomic Underground Cybele's Reverie Noise of Carpet Miss Modular Diagonals Parsec Fuses The Free Design Calimero How to Play Your Internal Organs Overnight Spacemoth Captain Easychord Instant O to the Universe Margerine Rock Margerine Melodie Metronomic Underground [Wagon Christ Mix] Dunno how many Stereolab fans are on here, but any input would be much appreciated! | |

ooh, and i just found this on the stereolab web site:
Duophonic and Stereolab are pleased to announce the formation of a new relationship between Too Pure/Beggars Banquet Group.
The first fruits of this deal will be the reissue of 'Switched On' at the end of February followed by the new disk from Monade [8th March in the USA and March 21st elsewhere]. Following on in late April / early May will be the 3 CD and 1 DVD boxset - 'Oscillons From The Anti-Sun'. We then hope to release 2 or 3 new EPs / singles by the end of 2005 with a new LP for release in 2006. Plenty to look forward to! | |

I really love Jenny Ondioline, though at 18 minutes plus, it does tend to wear out its welcome.
Transona Five is my favourite Stereolab song - I wish that groove would go on forever. | |

Transona Five is from Mars Audiac Quintet - probably my least favourite album by them (that I've heard - I kinda lost track after Dots and Loops). However, if you're making a mix of their "nicer songs", Wow and Flutter from that album would be a really good one as well - a very melodic, pleasant track. I also forgot to mention Golden Ball, which I think builds to a fairly awe-inspiring climax. I've never heard of monade (splinter group, I assume?) - love the High Llamas, though, especially Hawaii and Gideon Gaye. | |

damosuzuki said: I've never heard of monade (splinter group, I assume?) - love the High Llamas, though, especially Hawaii and Gideon Gaye. monade is laetitia's solo thing...last summer she put out a CD of four-track songs she recorded in her home - it was really nice but unremarkable. good reading music. that kind of thing. gideon gaye is a wonderful album with some really, really amazing songs on it. i just only recently discovered the van dyke parks album that the album cover is a spoof of. pretty clever! buzzle bee is another really nice high llamas album, though my all-time favorite is snowbug. | |

I wasn't aware of the Van Dyke Parks parody - I'm only vaguely aware of him through his Brian Wilson/Smile connection. What's the name of the album? Think it's worth pursuing musically? I have a lot of love for Gideon Gaye - I'd say it's probably the best batch of tunes he's written, though I prefer Hawaii, just for the overall tone that the album sets. | |

...wellll, maybe not an OBVIOUS rip-off, but given the llamas' sound, i'm guessing the design wasn't a coincidence. 
i haven't heard the van dyke parks album, but i'm curious about it. didja know he did soundtrack work for pee wee's playhouse, as well? | |

Definitely letting their influences show - oddly, the cover of my copy of Gideon Gaye has a significantly different design, though I cannot find a sample of it anywhere online... Again, I didn't know about the pee wee connection, though I was aware he had done s/t work...I have heard that Song Cycle is the van dyke parks album to own. I'll have to track it down one day... | |
