"Dress You Up" was the first song I liked by her -- just sounded "Princey" to me in a Vanity/Apollonia kinda way. But I really didn't like anything else she did in the '80s except maybe "Everybody," "Dear Jesse," "Oh Father," and "Act of Contrition." I didn't like her style or the way she acted -- I pretty much hated anything she released during this time. But in the 90s, she experimented more with different styles of music. I can get into songs like "Secret," "Love Don't Live Here Anymore ('95 version)," "This Used To Be My Playground," "Frozen," "Power of Goodbye," "Don't Tell Me," and "What It's Like For a Girl" -- mostly 90s stuff, right? She had a really good producer during that time, which helped as well. But besides the songs I mentioned, she still has a long way to go before she impresses me much. I think maybe it's the being controversial for the sake of stirring up controversy that irks me as well. "If you got it, you don't have to flaunt it."

There is only one producer in her carear that has worked with her for any length of time and has worked on the majority of her hits. I think the producers name is Madonna. Most every other producer does an album maybe two if they are lucky

In the '80s, she worked with Patrick Leonard, right? But the '90s producer-writer-musicians I was thinking of were: William Orbit and Mirwais (Ahmadzai). They do some very cool stuff.

I'm worried about Madonna. Not only did she have her first flop ("American Life") but her competition is so much younger and nubile. I've never counted her out before so I guess I shouldn't now but what's a woman who used to be a sex symbol to do when her looks are fading and her antics seem out of place? Can she make a comeback? My sister had an idea that might just work for Mrs. Ritchie. She loves her ballads and thinks, since she's older now, that she should go that route. Even Linda Ronstadt(sp) hung up her hot pants and roller skates at some point.

Such success for madonna cannot go on forever. It ended for MJ and maybe this is it for madonna. As long as she sticks it out with her music, i'll always support her.
And she may pull off a "Cher" and come out with a smash hit with the right timing.

Once again I don't understand why people underrate her as a producer. WO and Mirwais have said that she brought what they did and turned into pop. Listen to WO and Mirwais without her and it's abstract electro.

Madonna: Reggie Lucas, Mark Kamins, Jellybean Bentiz
Like A Virgin: Nile Rodgers
True Blue: Madonna, Patrick Leonnard, Steven Bray
Like A Prayer: Madonna, Patrick Leonnard, Steven Bray, Prince
I'm Breathless: Madonna Patrick Leonnard, Shep Pettibone
Erotica: Madonna, Shep Pettibone, Andre Betts
Bedtime Stories: Madonna, Dave Hall, Dallas Austin, Nelle Hooper, Babyface
Ray of Light: Madonna, William Orbit, Maruis Devris
Music: Madonna Mirwais, Guy Sigsworth
American Life: Madonna, Mirwais, Guy Sigsworth

since True Blue WB has given her free reign to do what she wants. So far she has delervied some of the best pop music of the past 20 years. The most common ingredient in the everything is Madonna.

American Life was only a flop in the US. Everywhere else it did well. It has sold 5million worldwide. That's a big flop.

Still on the charts in France #1 in the UK and the US
produced 5 UK top 5's.

She won't pull a Cher cause she'd have to stop and come back, which she hasn't done and won't do.

She just has to release another hot dance track and all will be fine in Madonna land. She is a force of nature.

I don't under-rate Madonna as a producer, but I believe some of the producers she worked with were a good influence on her work, and I believe it was for that reason why she chose to work with them, even writing songs with many of them. Was not Mirwais (in addition to Orbit) a songwriter on some of the Ray of Light tracks? She later used him as a producer as well. I believe she owes a lot of her musical evolution to the various producers and songwriters she's worked with. I know it's made me dig some of her music more.

No Mirwais didn't come to work with Mads til Music. WO Guy Sigsworth Maruis Devris Patrick Leonnard Susannah Melvoin and few other people were who she worked with the songs. Most of the songwriting done with WO.

Ray of Light was orginally going to be an effort with Patrick and Babyface, but Mad got a new demo of WO, and after going back to listen to the remimxes he did for her... she shelved most of the work she had all ready started, and recored with WO in the co-producer chair. Pat and Mo wrote Frozen but Mo and WO produced. In the interview she gave with Kurt Lauder she said Pat is great at helping her write the dark melonchy music she likes. She and Pat have great working chemistry.

I think she is great pop producer and bringing people's ideas back to the Mainstream, but she's also good at taking other's advice when it comes to the music. Artists don't devlop past a certain point if they don't get fresh inspiration and points of view.

I think certain artist start to fail after they think they don't need help anymore.

Madonna was going back in the studio to record with WO again, when Guy Orseay of Maverick handed her demos from Mirwais. And only 3 of the tracks she worked with him on made the cut. Also all the tracks recored with the DJ Sasha were shelved as well.

too bad they will probably never see the light of day.

whereas P i sometimes think is behind the leaks of his songs to build up the mythology.

Mo would rather keep the mystery of what's really in her collection of unrelased stuff.

i tend to think there is some really edgy things a la the Beast Within, that she keeps hiden cause she wants to stay pop

Madonna will be just fine. No,she probably won't sell records like she did in the 80s,but that's okay. She still has a massive worldwide fanbase.Yes, the 'American Life' CD was less than a blockbuster, but her 2004 world tour sold out everywhere and grossed over $124 million. She always finds a way to "bounce back" when people start writing her off.And no,there's no need for her to reinvent herself into a ballad-singing lounge act, lol.

1. First Madonna album you purchased or were given?
my mom bought her debut in 1984 for me. we wore that tape out. it wasn't until many years later (when i was able to buy my own tapes) that i got into her. it was in the lead-up to Erotica. that's the first one i bought upon release. i'd already snatched up all of the others in the meantime.

2. First video you remember seeing; and which is your favourite to date?
Open Your Heart; Bad Girl

3. Have you ever seen her in concert; which tours and how many times?
Re-Invention Tour, against my better judgement. but i enjoyed it anyway.

4. Favourite movie?
Truth Or Dare

5. Favourite album?
Erotica or American Life. still haven't decided.

6. Favourite song?
oh dear. Nothing Fails and Drowned World are my top 2. though Rain, Like A Prayer, I Want You, Bad Girl, Express Yourself, Vogue, Deeper And Deeper, Holiday, Into The Groove, You'll See, and Live To Tell are all up there.

7. Best scandal or controversial moment?
lord, how do you pick just one?

8. Who would you like to see her do a duet with?
i always thought she'd mesh well with George Michael. on record, anyway.

9. MADONNA: 80's, 90's, or 00's?
as far as personality? late 80's/early 90's. she was on top of the world and had the biggest balls in the business.

10. Would you like to see her do an unplugged set or not?
nah.

11. "Love Song" w/ Prince: Loved it or could've been better?
could've been better

12. Immaculate Collection and GHV2: Loved them or could've been better?
TIC is great, but could have been slightly better if every song hadn't been remixed, however slightly. seems incomplete, as well, but "the Holiday collection" ep goes a long way toward remedying that. after that, only Dress You Up is the only glaring omission

13. Next album: Dance? Electronica? Straight foward pop?
all 3 at the same time, preferrably

14. What artist/s do you see a major MADONNA influence in. Besides BRITNEY wink
pretty much anyone classified as a pop star. she re-wrote the book that Elvis laid forth. even moreso than MJ.

15. Favourite television moment?
"....to rule the world"

16. Favourite B-Side?
Supernatural. though Has To Be is a great runner-up

17. First single you purchased or were given?
This Used To Be My Playground

18. Last single you purchased or were given?
i bought Nothing Fails for my roommate and i. he bought Love Profusion for us.

19. Last album you purchased?
American Life

20. Will you be buying the next one? wink
i think i'd rather die than not have a new Madonna album the first minute of release

21. You favourite artist overall, or favourite female?
she's tied with Prince at #1. although Bowie is always lurking, waiting for his moment to strike either one (or both) of them out of the pole position.

Bedtime Stories - but hate the actual song "Bedtime Story"

Time Stood Still

7. Best scandal or controversial moment?

I'll never forget the furore when she admitted that she shoots pheasants. It was just very memorable and she lost a load of fans. I was co-running Madonnarama.com back then. I guess that's "most memorable scandal" rather than "best".

8. Who would you like to see her do a duet with?

George Michael

9. MADONNA: 80's, 90's, or 00's?

90s - she was insane.

10. Would you like to see her do an unplugged set or not?

Yes.

11. "Love Song" w/ Prince: Loved it or could've been better?

Loved it. I can't imagine them singing anything else together other than this.

12. Immaculate Collection and GHV2: Loved them or could've been better?

Loved Immaculate Collection but GHV2 was very disappointing - too many edits.

13. Next album: Dance? Electronica? Straight foward pop?

Indie Rock.

14. What artist/s do you see a major MADONNA influence in. Besides BRITNEY wink

I really don't know.

15. Favourite television moment?

The 2001 Turner Prize Awards. "Right On, Motherfuckers!" lol

16. Favourite B-Side?

Why's It So Hard (Live) - the B-Side of "I'll Remember"

17. First single you purchased or were given?

Like A Prayer - 3" cd single in a longbox.

18. Last single you purchased or were given?

American Pie, I think.

Like A Prayer - I have copies of all her other albums though.

20. Will you be buying the next one? wink

What? Mike's Invincible sold more than AL. No1s sold more than A.L too. And even with a trial like this going on he sells more than Madonna on a weekly basis as you can see from Amit's posts wink
