Stay In My Corner by the Dells

I was the youngest of six. I remember being fed while sitting in a high chair by my older brothers and sister and they'd sing along to the part of the song that goes "I love you..stay, I love you..stay"

My real first name is Stacy, or Stay for short. Cute, huh?

more songs that I remember as a small child.

Michael Jackson - Thriller
I remember thinking that the characters from the video lived inside if the radio. When the song was on the radio, I wouldnt go near it. I was terrified.

George Benson - Turn Your Love Around
My uncle plays the trumpet and he would always play this song.

J Geils Band - Centerfold
My aunts would rock out to this song. I was in charge of putting the needle on the record. I ususally scratched the record up though and got yelled at. I remember the album cover very well. Wasnt it the one where they were painting and there was paint all over the place?

Patti Labelle - If Only You Knew
It seemed like this song was always on.

Prince - Dirty Mind
What can I say? lol

Dance Dance Dance by Chic. I must have been an infant when this was popular. It's my earliest memory of music.

Others that stand out-

Puttin' On the Ritz (Taco)
I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), (Hall & Oates) - a favorite when I was 5.
Solid (Ashford & Simpson) - I can recall the background guitar perplexing me
Material Girl (Guess who)
Treat Her Like A Lady (The Temptations)

Gosh there are so many that make me flashback to ages 5-9.

Too Much Heaven - The Bee Gees
Angel in Your Arms - Hot
Native New Yorker - Odyssey
You Light Up My Life - Debbie Boone
I Was Made for Lovin' You - KISS
Gloria - Enchantment
Rise - Herb Alpert
With You - The Moments
Take Me I'm Yours - Michael Henderson
Don't Cost You Nothing - Ashford and Simpson
Got To Get You Into My Life (back then I hadn't heard of The Beatles)/Serpentine Fire - Earth, Wind & Fire
Reaching For the Sky - Peabo Bryson
The Groove Line - Heatwave
Love Rollercoaster - Ohio Players

Looking at some of the 45's, most of the songs were out around 1977 & 1978, which is a trip cuz I associate most of those songs with being in Kindergarten and 1st grade.

Summer Breeze by Seals and Croft
...something must've happened to me when I was a child around the time that this song was popular...because everytime I hear it I feel really sad and depressed...and I think of my (normally happy) childhood.

Loving You by Minnie Ripperton
...was my favorite song as a little kid (Kindergarden?) because of the birds chirping in the background.

Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac
...reminds me of the school bus ride to my elementary school 'cuz the bus driver had a tape player/radio that was ALWAYS playing Fleetwood Mac!

Yep...those 3 always take me back to my childhood whenever I hear them.
By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

My parents played a lot of Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Michael Martin Murphy, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles and Hank Snow around the house. Also lots of "AM Gold" type music -a lot of songs that I'm not sure of the title or artist, but when I hear them I'm 3 years old again.

Also, "Blue Wing" -Tom Russell. It was what we played at my dad's funeral. I cry every time I hear it. Even typing this is making me tear up a little. sad

He had a blue wing tattooed on his shoulder
Well it might have been a blue bird I don't know
But he gets stone drunk and talks about Alaska
The salmon boats and 45 below

He said he got that blue wing up in Walla Walla
And his cellmate there was Little Willy John
And Willy, he was once a great blues singer
And winging Willy wrote him up a song. He said…

CHORUS:
It's dark in here; can't see the sky
But I look at this blue wing and I close my eyes
And I fly away beyond these walls
Up above the clouds where there ain't no fault
On a poor man's dreams.

They paroled Blue Wing in August1963
He moved North picking apples to the town of Wenatchee
Then winter finally caught him in a run down trailer park
On the South side of Seattle where the days grow gray and dark

And he drank and he dreamt a vision of when the salmon still ran free
And his fathers, fathers, fathers crossed that wild old Bering Sea
And the land belonged to everyone and there were old songs yet to sing
Now it's narrowed down to a cheap hotels and a tattooed prison wing

CHORUS:

Well he drank his way to LA; And that's where he died
And no one knew his Christian name and there was no one there to cry
But I dreamt there was a funeral; A preacher and a cheap pine box
And half way through the service, Blue Wing began to talk. He said…

CHORUS:

Hey hey, On a poor man's dreams;
Hey hey, On a poor man's dreams.

My mother used to have an 8 Track tape of Percy Sledge and she used to wear that thing out in the car. She played it so much it until finally it got tangled up the player. When we dug the tape out, the player still worked but the speed was speeded up. She bought another Percy Sledge 8 Track to replace it, but Percy sounded like the damned chipmunks. lol

This ain't even fair. Jeez, where do you start?

With my grandmother playing...

...Didn't It Rain, I Will Move On Up A Little Higher or Walk Over God's Heaven?

From my dad's Jazz collection the 1st jazz trumpeter (not Miles) and drummmer (not Elvin)...

...What Is This Thing Called Love? or Love Is a Many Splendored Thing
(their take on "Splendored Thing" showed how a tune could be rearranged.)

Or the 1st jazz guitar instrumental (not Wes)...

...Wait Till You See Her or 0500 Blues.

Or the 1st female Jazz vocalist I heard...

...that showed how to interpret and then re-interpret a melody (Cottontail).

Or my Mom giving to opera and pop vocalists...

Marian Anderson - Attended one of her farewell concerts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Don't remember what she sang but I do remember her elegance and the power and beauty of her voice.

Johnny Mathis - Chances Are

Nat King Cole - Ramblin' Rose

Probably most of all my early musical memories revolved around a new best friend...

...a pocket transistor radio that stayed on all night under my pillow.

It provided me with some of the greatest pop tunes ever created.

I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos
Misty - Johnny Mathis
The Twist - Chubby Checker
Only The Lonely - Roy Orbison
Quarter To Three - Gary U.S. Bonds
Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles
Green Onions - Booker T & The M.G.'s
He's A Rebel - The Crystals
Do You Love Me - The Contours
Big Girls Don't Cry - The Four Seasons
Playboy - The Marvelettes
On Broadway - The Drifters
It's All Right - The Impressions
Heat Wave - Martha & The Vandellas
Be My Baby - The Ronettes
Our Day Will Come - Ruby & The Romantics

and on and on and on
All courtesy of WMCA, WABC, WWRL, WLIB, WOR-FM, WNEW-FM and WBAI-FM

That radio took me through the Motown era, the British Invasion (I still have my 45 of I Want To Hold Your Hand).

And that eventually led to this pivotal record...

...heard while listening to Murray the K one night on WOR-FM via that transistor radio through my pillow.

"Brian Epstein just sent me a tape of this wildman from England..."
