Makeover My Music Collection

What I have? Every "official" release by Prince, Madonna, Tori, U2, Sting, The Police, Wilco, and Bjork - and that's it. The rest is comprised of local bands' stuff (MN) or - and don't stone me - Greatest Hit Collections by various artists (Rolling Stones, Sly, EW&F, Bob Dylan - you get the idea).

For someone who professes to love music as much as I do, this is an embarrassingly sparse assortment. Help me out, please.

Browse through some old school rap albums, and go to CDzLimited to see which ones you like.

Okay - I'm glad you said that. Here's my dilemma: I love hip hop, I do - but I've become bored with the hip hop albums I own. I had (yes, past tense) some Salt N Pepa, some Eazy-E, some Eminem, but I TIRED of them so quickly. What are some tried and true rap albums that seem impervious to dust? Tupac? Biggie? Do tell! Thanks.

Pick up 'Low' and 'Heroes' from Bowie and 'Speaking in Tongues' and 'Fear of Music' by the Talking Heads, especially if you like the Eno-era albums by U2. They don't necessarily sound alike, but they all have the same "presence".

Sweet. Going back to my Greatest Hits faux pas, I do have Sand In The Vaseline, but that's a far cry from Fear of Music, isn't it? I will check out each of the ablums you've recommended. Thank you!

wink Just doing my duty as a fan and spreading the word. Sand in the Vaseline is far from a faux pas anyway, because it's got a few gems that aren't available anywhere else.

Nothing wrong with greatest hits sets. They're a great starting point for some excellent bands. I started off with an EWF greatest hits set, then went crazy. If you like their greatest hits and want more good stuff (a lot of their album tracks are excellent), try Spirit, All N All and/or Open Our Eyes. They're great places to start for EWF.

Speaking of local artists, have you tried Low? They're pretty cool and from (I think) the Duluth area. Kind of remind me of Wilco, Portishead, Julee Cruise.

Once you get some funk....the rest you'll consider junk!

Get you some:

Rick James
The Barkays
Roger & Zapp
Cameo
Lakeside
Midnight Star
Slave
Bill Summers & Summers Heat
Parliament/Funkadelic
Raydio

After you get the funk, then go after the disco.

After you get the disco, then go after the house.

We should all submit sample cd's representing some of the music we like. It would be a cool exchange program we could all subscribe to and learn more about different music.

If you are a hardcore fan of both Tori Amos and Björk then I suggest getting every official album by PJ Harvey. The three of them go together very well.
