I wish I could appreciate Joplin's voice, but I cannot. I feel like a loser admitting that, but it's the truth. Too much screaming for me.

I'm sad for you. RipHer is my boy but I'll give that broha a chance,,, Cry Baby I remember seeing an old footage of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue singing that tune in Diane Shore's Show as a tribute to her(Janis) when she died. In fact, if there's a white version of Tian Turner,,,that would def be Jan.

[Edited 1/28/05 11:47am] I read that two fast and thought for a second that our Prince covered this..and then I got it. Damn! I'm not a music snoob but to be dissapointed that someone was talking about the Joplin song instead of the Fresh Prince song....that's a laugh riot, my friend!

One thing I always loved about Janis was that though she was completely influenced by the blues greats, she didn't just bite in lame imitation--she sang from the bottom of HER own soul, that sassy Tex-ASS white gal soul. She didn't pretend to be something she wasn't. She sang with her own damn voice and didn't just steal it from somebody else.

I love Janis Joplin. She could turn me into a lesbian for a night or two. We could go to an island together to climb in the trees and pluck bananas. We could go for a swim, I would drown and she would save me.
I just love her voice. She was a pretty bed girl, that's for sure, but she was so passionate ! "You fixed yourself, you said 'well nevermind, we are ugly but we have the music' "

"Disturbed" screams..but it's a good scream...still it is just a scream. Janice: that "screaming" sound is the pouring out of ones soul...but if ya not feelin that...I guess it is just screams. Not a really big Janis Joplin fan myself.
Mainly because many of her most well known tunes were done better by the original artist. These tunes are worth hearing however if you keep that in mind... Piece of My Heart (originally done by Erma Franklin) Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) - (originally done by Lorraine Ellison) Cry Baby (originally done by Garnet Mimms) Get It While You Can - (originally done by *Howard Tate) All the above tunes were co-written by the great Jerry Ragovoy. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * Howard Tate and Jerry Ragovoy reformed their late 60s partnership to release... ...Rediscovered in 2003. The release features a Ragovoy/Elvis Costello colab called Either Side Of The Same Town. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I kinda get beside myself...ya know...talkin' smack and stuff. Apologies! Seriously, I'm not a BIG fan of the "voice" either. But it's what's beyond the voice that I'm into. So sweet. Now I get the Janice Pain. It was the pain of the strain to be Ms Erma. Seriously, wherever it comes from, it's that strain/struggle that makes Janice appealing. Struggle is struggle and everyone relates to that. Will go down the list and check out the others...thanx Anon P.S. sounds like the Beatles took a little piece of that songie too "I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either" ~ Jesse Owens

Reading my post again, i'm thinking I should have left my opinion out and just made folks, that didn't already know, aware of the original versions. But I heard them before Janis did hers so I admit to being biased. I'll just have to imagine that Garnet is a big middle age chic. It sounds better that way. (Except for the "other guy" references.) RE: Piece of My Heart Didn't want to imply that I like the Janice song more...I don't. I don't like it less either. They're 2 different animals. I actually do prefer Janice today(the energy of it)...tomorrow that might not be the case. Not a Janice die-hard or anything...I'm here 'cause the convo is cool. Also because I've got stuff to do and I'm kinda procrastinating. The songs of Janice that I like, I really like. The ones I don't like I may never listen to again. Like that Mercedes song. Oh Lord, won't you get someone to cover that song. You can stone Mike B (Panther514) if I've offended anyone. He lives in Ohio. Columbus. Would that remove an s-load of falsetto Prince performances from your list then? The songs of Janice that I like, I really like. The ones I don't like I may never listen to again. Like that Mercedes song. Oh Lord, won't you get someone to cover that song. As a matter of fact, that tune has been covered quite a bit: Bob Neuwirth (co-wrote it) Dusty Wright Concrete Blonde Gilby Clarke Goose Creek Symphony Taj Mahal (my pick) You can stone Mike B (Panther514) if I've offended anyone. I haven't heard alot of the original songs Janis covered either , but Ive always liked her version of "Maybe" better than the Three Degree's version.
Ive always enjoyed her work , but I understand that she could be grating to those who didn't . I used to drive my mother crazy with "I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again ,Mama" "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."
