You don't have to be black to have soul. Teena Marie, George Michael, Phil Collins, maybe Justin Timberlake (depending on who you ask). It's all about being able to convincingly make us feel the mood of the song. Freedom was a great album with great soul ballads. I've purchased the tape and the cd it's timeless.

I have a love-indifferent relationship with Josh Stone. Sure that white girl gots some soul, but at times she comes off as too young. But I heard this new song of hers and she tears it up. I say give her ten years when she really learns how to feel a record then watch out!

I didnt know any black people (including myself) that didn't give George Michael props for this faith album. I think its actually less of an inssue with race in the black music community if the person is truly soulful and not just labeled as such. Same with other white or Bi-racial artist. Look at Jon B in the 90's his voice was so soulful I didn't notice he was white. Same with Bobby Calwell if you never saw him you'd swear that "What you wont do for love was by a black artist. But I do believe that sometimes and every race is guilty of it, we'll vote for someone of our race just because they maybe the underdog in thier field ie the eminem/Lenny Kravitz syndrome, they are both very talented but they maybe the only or one of few sucessful artist of their race in their particular genre.
BTW I really hate Dionne Warwick, what happend to her psychic powers when she tried to get that weed thru the airport. "Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine"

I just heard Bobby Caldwell's song a second ago and all my life I thought he was black. I agree on the blue-eyed soul thing. I think George Michael and Lisa Stansfield are great examples. I don't care what color they are as long as it sounds true to the genre. Just as if I was listening to country music, they better sound country. That's if the industry is still interested in ten years. Mostly likely, a new "young" girl would be getting all the attention.

That little fucker does not have soul! Anyway, this thread is hilarious. I don't remember the ruckus over George, but "Faith" was considered and r&b/soul album What brand of crack were they smokin'? Why are people surprised by the anger over it? What it comes down is r&b, soul, jazz, and blues was considered solely "black music" by white folks until they decided they wanted to do it themselves. Then, it suddenly isn't about race anymore, everybody can have soul now. What a crock of shit! So, you refuse to play us on your stations and have white artists cover our songs until you decide it's acceptable by all and put one of yours in one of the categories you set aside for us because we couldn't be included in yours Where's the confusion, really. I completely understand why Freddy, Dionne and who the fuck ever would be angry. I'm still not getting the whole "Faith" being r&b/soul thing That's the same as putting Timberfake's ass in the same category as D'Angelo, Angie Stone, and Maxwell. Don't make sense

ya'll have some hella memories... This was on a salute to the Apollo show that was on in 1985 or 1986 if memory serves, on NBC. It was a couple years after that Motown special , which was a big hit. I remember Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, George Michael, Boy George, Joe Cocker, Patti Labelle, Rod Stewart, and I think Wilson Pickett. I had this on tape, too. Should go dig it out and watch it again #SOCIETYDEFINESU

Black folks never supported Lenny Kravitz en masse. Macy Gray either. That's because generally "Black" radio stations and video outlets have a limited view of what constitutes Black music . Artists who do styles (or even more important it seems, dresses or looks a certain way), that doesn't fit what's considered acceptable on these stations , are kept out, and don't get exposure to the Black audience. And most people aren't that adventurous in their musical tastes, so they accept what they're fed, and don't go out of their way to hear new things and learn to appreciate them . I really wish there was a station that focused on Black music that played everything from Ella to Muddy Waters to Chuck Berry to Charlie Pride to Wynton Marsalis to Public Enemy to the Ojays, but I guess that's only a dream #SOCIETYDEFINESU

(I watched it because I taped it for an orger) Patti Labelle tore it up. Sam Harris sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow Jennifer Holiday style and tore it up too. This show actually made me get into Sarah Vaughn. She performed live and there was clip of her singing The Nearness of You. Wow!!! It was nice to watch again after all these years. In both of his performances, w/Stevie and w/Luther Boy couldn't catch up. There are some few moments that are good but not overall. Part Time Lover was out of his range he had to go low register and it didn't sound good. George Michael and Rod Stewart sang way better than he did unfortunately. Did u agree that George should not of even been nominated for soul album of the year? U reckon he won because whites saw a white guy in a black catorgory so deliberately voted for him just because of his skin colour? Anyone remember this? Whats ur view on it now? I understand why some black people were pissed off, but "faith" was a soul album right?.....the backing vox, the rhythm of the tracks.....all black influence! [Edited 1/28/05 11:14am] So on this premise. Prince, MJ, Jimi etc... could not qaulify for rock awards becasue they are black? I like to leave color out of it. If it was a soul album, regardless of who made it, and their level of skin pigmintation, it should have been in the running. GM was widely accepted as a soul artist back then, so it was legit. Your right though, the "we need white savor" syndrome ia always a factor! ala Justin Timberlake now he is a ripoff if there ever was one! But GM was legit.

I remember this well as it was a topic amongst some friends of mine for quite some time. This was the same year that Bobby McFerrin won best pop album of the year. It was an issue for many on the black community at the time because George's record wasn't THAT popular among black folks. Since the black community is a huge minority when it comes to Grammy votes, lots of people were pissed. At the time, R&B was considered primarily black folk's music. This was before the overly political correct 90s era, so it was understood and no one seemed to have a problem with it. Since most of the Grammy voters are white males, many found it offensive that George was "aced in" by his own people. Black folk liked George - even I like George, but at the time not more than the other nominees. Back then, the Grammys held more merit than they do these days. Personally, I was done with them in '87 when they voted Paul Simon's "Graceland" as album of the year over Janet Jackson's
Control" That was some bullshit. Never cared about a Grammy since.
