If you've got to ask.... That's too easy. Soul isn't something you can reduce to words. People seem to be confusing passion and feeling with soul. I think any race can have soul but expressing it is a different story. Bob Dylan doesn't have a soulful voice but his lyrics definitely have them. The same goes for Joni Mitchell and Ani Difranco all of whom I love. Rare is the voice that is soulful. That belongs to people like Sam Cooke or Terence Trent D'arby. Even great voices like Michael Jackson's and Whitney's aren't in that league.

Some write with soul, others dance with soul-- Bobby Brown is a good example here because even though he can't sing a lick he's got the dancing part down. Van Gogh painted with soul-- I know I'm stretching it. Again either you have it or you don't but it manifests in various ways. Just because you can't dance or sing doesn't mean you don't have it. Besides, I think to appreciate it you have to recognize it as a part of yourself.
