How is Funkadelic's 1971 album, Maggot Brain?

I remember back in 2003 when I bought the reissue of One Nation Under A Groove. I was so fanscinated by the way Funkadelic synthesized the music styles on that revolutionary masterpiece. But now, I just want one album to show what they did back in the early 70's. I heard that Maggot Brain sounded like Sly Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On. I also heard that the title track was really really awesome with Eddie Hazel playing some of the most killer guitar licks of all-time. So is Maggot Brain really worth it?

It's kickass! guitar You gotta check out "Hit It & Quit It". That's a pretty funky jam.

Also, the title track has an amazing solo by the late great Eddie Hazel. biggrin

Maggot Brain alone is one of the purest most emotionally powerful guitar solos in the history of rock n roll. And there's plenty of other goodies where that came from too. Sometimes I'm amazed at how much top quality music was made under the supervision of george clinton

When you hear that track, you would never guess it was recorded in the early seventies. It has a sort of timeless feel to it.

Suitable for chilling. cool

I would love to be there when you hear "Maggot Brain" for the first time and see your face. "Maggot Brain" is the holy grail! Believe me! In fact do yourself a favor and go out and pick up all pre-1975 Funkadelic albums. The best guitar work will be on these albums. Good luck in finding Eddie Hazel's solo album titled "Games, Dames, and Guitar thangs". It'll be good to your earhole.

Really, I could go on 4ever about Eddie Hazel. He reached for the stars on the title track and he touched them. He had so much emotion in his playing and showed the love he had for Hendrix in spades. Hazel has always been a HUGE influence on me as a guitarist. Really, any of Hazel's playing be it on Funkadelic, his solo albums and some of his best playing I feel is on Ruth Copeland's albums.

this track was recorded around Midnight sometime around 1970, GC went up to eddie during the session and handed him 2 tabs of acid and said "drop this and play like someone close to you died" and there u have it.

Legend has it that Clinton told Eddie to try and imagine that his mother had just died and try to capture that in his playing.
