OMG! I meant to mark this on my calendar, for real!!! Really! I read "Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America" a couple of weeks ago. There's a section called "Ten Memorable Moments in Black Hair History." 1/27/84 is number 6! I thought this was kind of funny in a way since all the other dates give just the year. Anyway, the book says that MJ was "irritated at the insinuations that his Curl had been partially to blame." And speaking of the "curl", the book mentions that Jheri Redding (inventer of the Jheri Curl) was a White farm boy from Illinois. Who knew?

Let me get it right. Redding invented a process that turned straight hair curly. He got together with a Black colleague to reformulate this product for "black hair." However, a guy named Willie Lee Morrow had already been working on a similar product. Morrow called his the "California Curl." Jheri curls were pretty flammable. MJ couldn't blame that on pyro.
