I just saw an amazing jazz performance

I just got home after seeing the McCoy Tyner Trio at Yoshi's in Oakland.

McCoy, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham just blew my mind and I have to tell someone.

Seeing these giants in a 315 person capcity room with unbelievable acoustics was amazing.

I love this place!

Check it out when your in town, but call me, 'cuz I want to go too!

It was unreal. They played Mr. Day off of McCoy Tyner Plays John Coltrane, which I think is nominated for a Grammy. THey also played a tune called Happy Day. Other's I could not name, but there was some incredible musicianship going on. Clarke was playing upright and was doing things that I have never seen with that instrument, slapping, strumming chords in an almost flamenco fashion, all over the neck. His playing is so fluid. Tyner is blazing and nothing needs to be said about Cobham.

Tyner is playing his 11th annual two week residency at Yoshi's. THis week is the Trio, next week he is playing with a different roster, including Ravi Coltrane.

That room looks a lot like the "one-song-every-weekend" glam slam room over at the npgmclub.

in november 2004, i saw the mccoy tyner trio with guests, pharoah sanders and ravi coltrane (john coltrane's son) in atlanta at the rialto theater. great, great show.
during the first tune, pharoah started taking this amazing solo, and started crying, and clutching his chest, i thought he was going to drop dead of stage in front of me. he is really old, right after his solo, he sort of limped off stage and sat in the wings, and drank some bottled water. for the rest of the show, he looked more comfortable.
mccoy, was smoking that night.

Whoa, what a team!
I know they killed it.

Yoshi's is a stellar venue.
My best friend did a gig there a few years ago with Nancy Wilson.

Not this one...

Lucky me, I got to watch the show sharing a table with Coleen Williams

Harlepolis

I saw McCoy Tyner Trio in a Billie Holiday tribute gig in a Chicago joint called "La Arabia". At the middle of the pre4mance he said he wished that Phyllis Hyman would join him in this engagment, she would've killed this and then played "Strange Fruit" as an encore(like how Billie Holiday ends her live gigs).

Cool brotha nod

eek Mose Allison - Feb.8-10
eek eek Joey DeFrancesco & Jimmy Smith - Feb.16-20

Man, I wish I could walk to Yoshi's. I am only a few miles away, but I would go a lot more often if it was down the street. How do you like living over there? I've been thinking of buying something and I might be able to swing a small place in that neighborhood.
