Why was Madonna a no-show? With the news of the "We are the world" 20th anniversary re-release/DVD, I'm wondering, why wasn't Madonna involved in the project? Let the rain come down...17 days....

Madonna wasn't originally involved in "we are the world" anyways

I don't know why she wasn't originally involved.
She was certainly high-profile enough by the end of 1984 to be considered. [Edited 1/25/05 12:06pm]

She was at the AMA's earlier that evening as Prince was. Prince chose to write a song for the soundtrack instead as he was not the kind to join this kind of gathering. Madonna may have felt the same way... Every minute of last night is on my face today....

[Edited 1/25/05 12:06pm] I think Cyndi Lauper at the time was much more high profile either that or she was scared to sing live back then...her voice was paper-thin back in them days and the thought of having to sing live with folks like stevie, bruce, gladys and the lot must have been intimidating for her (back then..).. It's possible she may not haven been invited 2 participate. U have 2 remember, back in '85 even though she was still wildy popular, she was also thought of then as Britney is now. A splash in the pan with no credibility. She didn't have a superstar Brother 2 get her in2 the session *cough* LaToya *cough* It's all good though, because the song that knocked "We Are The World" from the # 1 spot was "Crazy For You". Mad's probably wasn't invited because they didn't feel she'd be around long enough to actully do something, and she was to controversal an artist.
Dick Clark had to fight with ABC to allow her to be in the TV broadcast of Live Aide You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

She redeemed herself by doing Live Aid instead.

CORRECTION: Madonna did Live Aid. Kylie Minogue was the one that did Band Aid. [Edited 1/26/05 2:55am]

YEah Live Aid wasn't the best showcase of her vocal abilities. I do like hearing her do LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND with the Thompson Twins. Let the rain come down...17 days....
