Alexander O'Neal...Too Black? I was reading Alexander O'Neal's bio at All Music, and it starts off with this:
This Minneapolis soul man cut his teeth in the Time but was bounced (for looking "too black") before they signed with Warner Brothers. Does anyone know anything more about this? Was this decision a Warner-influenced one? The Time had/has a "black" sound, so I don't understand the decision without any more information than they give there. [Edited 1/23/05 21:51pm]

Actually,I heard that he was fired from The Time because he got into an argument with Prince.Apparently,Alexander wanted more money and Prince told him to take a hike.He was replaced with Morris Day.

[Edited 1/23/05 21:51pm] Long Story Short: The real reason why Prince fired Alexander O'Neal had nothing to do with being "too black looking or sounding". He was fired from The Time because he wanted more money. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis had verify this story more than once before. And Alexander also admitted that he and Prince had never seen "eye to eye" musically.

That's what I heard. However, who is say, it could be possible that Alex's complextion did play a factor considering that are we are not living in a color blind society.

I've heard stories about Prince and Alexander not getting along, but this "too black" issue is the first I've heard of it. I only ask because allmusic.com is usually pretty reliable. I'm just wondering where they'd gotten it from. I don't think they'd just make it up.
