HIStory is by far his greatest record.
People call it too whiney and self-indulgent. I'm sorry but (assuming he really IS innocent) if anybody has the right to a whine it's Michael Jackson. He pours his heart out onto this record and it is by far his most personal and moving album to date. His vocals in They Don't Care About Us... where else have you heard a song with more intense anger? He is seriously pissed off and you really hear his pain. That awesome drum beat, with the layered strings... it still sounds fresh even today - ten years on. Money is a truly under-rated gem. The track is so richly layered. Listen to it on headphones... there's so many hidden parts. I love the bit at the end as the chorus is building to a climax and he's shouting "Getty, Getty, GETTY, GETTY". Very subtle track, with some of his best lyrics. Other notable highlights for me include the wonderfully eery Little Susie, the rocking D.S. (man, Slash's guitar on that one is hot!) and the funky Tabloid Junkie. Over-blown? Probably. Self-indulgent? Understandably so. His best album to date? Definately. [Edited 1/27/05 4:09am] | |
