Found my version (actually clean without grafitti scratches all over it at my house)
Technics SL-D2

anti-skating devices control the lateral force of the needle. Too much lateral force and the needle will bow to one side, too little and it bows to the other. Anti-skating should be set so the needle is dead-center when it sits in the groove. Otherwise, the needle tends to rise out of the groove and cause skipping.

I think it needs to be set to match the amount of weight applied to the stilus, as set by the counterweight at the opposite end of the tonearm.

I bought this and the same thing happened. My family had an emerson stereo/record player which lasted for 28 years.

I love it! I had a different Sears portable model as a kid (blue pin stripes), but this one's great. I do most of my record listening to that, because it's in my room and that's where the music listenin' happens. smile

Except mine was a Snoopy record player and my sister had a Raggedy Ann one just like it. lol

My mother used to have something similar to this:





This one's much older than her's was but you get the picture.
