THIS should be the billboard chart of the future!

this is the Billboard digital download top 50 chart

this is a great chart because this chart shows what people are actually buying and NOT what clear channel wants you to hear and buy

many have said that using this chart would be a bad idea because of the low download totals and i agree with that BUT if you notice there are several songs that have sold more 100,000 copies and some over 200,000 which i think is enough to have an accurate chart..check it out

Since this chart tracks the sale of downloads, how is it any different from charts that track brick and mortar sales? How does ClearChannel affect these sales any differently than those from other distribution sources? I guess its a fairly accurate representation of the taste of those who shop on online, rather than those who shop in the store, but I don't understand why it makes a superior guage of consumer taste.

I am sure I am missing something here or, more likely, your point, but I don't get it.

Does this chart differ significantly from the top 100? Curious.

the regular billboard hot 100 singles chart is made up of mostly radio airplay and a very small percentage is made up of single sales.so basically in the last 6 years the singles chart has not been an indication of whats popular with the public but whats popular with radio programmers(payola!) thats why you'll get a chart made up with songs with Ashley Simpson and ask "who the hell is buying this song to make it a hit??" and the answer is nobody smile the singles chart has been a scam since they allowed airplay only singles to chart

another thing lets take Prince's Musicology single as an example...top 40 stations did not play it at all so it had no chance in hell of making it into the billboard top 40 but Musicology was a top 40 download for quite a few weeks on Itunes..so the public was buying it but the stations werent playing it..another example was Duran Duran's single "Sunrise" it actually was #3 in single sales at one point! but no where on the hot 100 chart due to lack of airplay..so like i said this chart is a much more fair way to see what songs are popular

Ahh, I see and it makes perfect sense. But if the Top 100 tracks radio adds, what this all about?: http://www.soundscan.com/about.html

"Nielsen SoundScan is an information system that tracks sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada. Sales data from point-of-sale cash registers is collected weekly from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant and non-traditional (on-line stores, venues, etc.) outlets. Weekly data is compiled and made available every Wednesday. Nielsen SoundScan is the sales source for the Billboard music charts."

confuse Thanks.

Wait, I see. I found this on the Billboard site, expaling the data used for the 100. "The most popular singles and tracks, according to radio audience impressions measured by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, and playlists from select non-monitored radio stations."

So, what is the breakdown between radio data, sales data etc. Any idea?

i dont know what the breakdown is but for the Duran Duran single to be #3 in sales and nowhere to be found on the hot 100 chart it must be very very heavily favored toward airplay

Interesting. The results of the two charts are somewhat comparable, although there are some differences.

I like #1, #3 and...well, that's it. Thats about the same hitrate as the one from the Hot 100, so I can't see how this is an improvement. sad

the improvement is at least its a chart decided by what the public is buying and not what radio wants to reach the top 40 and plus bands like Green Day can reach #1 on this chart (or maybe Prince someday) smile

lol That's still only between 20 and 50 thousand members of the public who are determining the charts.

I myself will never buy a downloadable single, because I want the physical product, so I hope they never go this route.

Yeah, that's what he said in the first post, the total numbers are still too small.

I'm with you on having something I can hold in my hands, but the more people download, the less likely we'll ever see a comeback of the retail single. sad
