Beck to Release "Guero" in March

Beck to Release "Guero"

Innovator's eighth studio album due in March

Beck will release his much-delayed eighth studio album, Guero (which means "White Boy" in Spanish), on March 29th. The follow-up to 2002's acoustic-based Sea Change features a collaboration with the White Stripes' Jack White, as well as production by the Dust Brothers, Tony Hoffer and Dan "the Automator" Nakamura.
"It's pretty aggressive," Beck told Rolling Stone. "I've been working on it for a while, but I ended up doing Sea Change first. I've been wanting to do a record with loud guitars for a long time."

Several of the songs, including "Girl," "Go It Alone" and the album's first single, "E-Pro," which hits radio next month, have been leaked on the Internet.

Much has changed for Beck since releasing his last album: last April he married Marissa Ribisi, twin sister of actor Giovanni Ribisi, and the couple gave birth to a son, Cosimo, shortly after.

Beck recently played two last-minute shows in Los Angeles. He debuted songs from Guero last week during a surprise gig at the Spaceland club, and last Monday, he joined Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Tenacious D at the Wiltern Theatre for a concert to benefit tsunami relief efforts.

Wonder how it'll sound? biggrin

just joshin'. what we've heard leaked thus far doesn't sound much to me like a "loud guitar album".

Summer Girl
Black Tambourine
Earthquake Weather (maybe)
Hell Yeah
Scarecrow
Go It Alone
Brazilica
Chain Reaction
Nazarene

What I've heard from these leaked tracks is really good. Beck isn't always high on my list, but when he's good, he's a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to the album.

After months of build-up and a forehead-slapping delay late in 2004, concrete details are finally surfacing regarding the long-awaited eighth Beck album (yes, Stereopathic Soulmanure counts). Mr. Hansen's official website has revealed that his new album will be called Guero and will be released in the U.S. on March 29.
The follow-up to 2002's acoustic-heavy Sea Change was produced by former Beck collaborators the Dust Brothers and, according to several reports, will mark an attempted return to Beck's signature 'junkyard-funk' sound. But you totally don't have to wait two months-- the album's lead single is "E-Pro", and it'll be at radio stations (and presumable for sale, although we don't have confirmed details on b-sides or release dates there) sometime next month. Of course, whether they play it is something else altogether.

Despite a few songs having already leaked into the lawless quagmire that is the online music-swapping community (who leaks this shit anyway?), the album's release date has not and will not be brought forward. Beck did, however, make an appearance earlier this week at the tsunami benefit gig at the Wiltern LG theater in Los Angeles, where he performed a few songs. Then "Lost Cause" began, Will Ferrell dipped on stage in a red body suit, and he started humping Beck's pump organ.

And yes, we wish we were kidding.

Black Tambourine and Go It Alone are THE jams! I just wished the guitar in Black Tambourine would be added a little more. And it's gotta be much longer!

Probably so.. it could be possible fans just renamed the tracks as soon as they saw it..

I wouldnt mind if chain reaction was left off and a new track was on...

Finished Version Of That Beck LP You Downloaded Due In March

Unmastered songs from eclectic singer's Guero have surfaced online.

It's arriving a little later than expected, but after a few delays in song selection, Beck now plans to release his new album, Guero, on March 29 — or possibly sooner, to minimize the damage of an Internet leak.

Initially due in

October 2004 (see "Oh, Delay! New Beck Album Pushed Back To 2005"), the follow-up to 2002's Sea Change forgoes the melancholy of his last breakup record and finds the Los Angeles native in an upbeat mood with a carefree, stripped-down approach. An unmastered and unfinished version of the record, erroneously titled Ubiquitous, has been floating around online for a few days now.

Produced by Odelay and Midnite Vultures collaborators the Dust Brothers, Guero (Mexican slang for a blond-haired, fair-skinned Caucasian) features 13 tracks that loosely act like a Beck mixtape — evoking the beat-driven material on Odelay, the acoustic tracks of 1998's Mutations and even the bluesy junk-shop textures of 1994's Mellow Gold.

While a definite creative and spiritual link to his '90s records is apparent, the major distinction is in the relaxed manner and noticeable maturity. Guero is Odelay minus the over-caffeinated Moogs and ping-ponging video game bedlam of albums past.

The album kicks off with "E-Pro," the album's first single, which features a beat seemingly jacked from a classic Beastie Boys record with a simple, heavy rock riff and marks a return to the Dadaist rhyming absent on the somber Sea Change.

"Girls" also has radio-playability written all over it. A funky up-tempo jam, the sun-drenched track features "oohs" and "aahs," breezy acoustic guitars and Beck's lithe falsetto. "Hell Yes" features more rhyming and a minimal electro groove, robotic voices and females cooing, "Please enjoy," while Beck maintains, "My beat is correct."

"Que Onda Guero" ("What up, whitey?") is a dead-ringer for vintage Cypress Hill in an East-L.A. barrio with its requisite Spanglish and low-rider beats.

The latter half of the record becomes moodier and psychedelic with songs like the sad, celestial ballad "Broken Drum," the down-tempo "Earthquake Weather," the dusty "Farewell Ride" and the almost trip-hop vibe of "Emergency Exit." The White Stripes' Jack White plays bass on the shuffling and sparse "Go It Alone."

A concept video for "E-Pro" has been shot, and an experimental pixilated video for "Black Tambourine," featuring a connect-the-dots dancing Beck, has also been made, but it's undetermined what that video will be used for.

Tracks recorded that didn't make the final cut, possibly destined to be B-sides, include the distortion-heavy "Novacane"-esque "Chain Reaction," "Gospel" and an unnamed track that sports a riff reminiscent of "Devil's Haircut," only funkier.

so it seems like 3 or 4 of these tracks are probably left off...

cause there aint no sad one's on here smile haha

so the fans renamed the tracks.. i figured...

I'm digging the material so far, and excited for the album. Which is srprising cos I have never really followed Beck's work. This may be what finally pulls me in! nod

Maybe this is just a leap in judgment, but something tells me that SDL Dawn is really, really excited for this album. Just a hunch I have.

I feel the same way you do. Part of my resistence to Beck stems from Rolling Stone's constant ass-kissing. I've enjoyed some of his work, but RS has had nothing but high praise for everything he's done. That's a big turn off for me.
