Musical Genres! I have been expanding my musical views ever since becoming interested in music. I come from a household that played mainly rock and I came home with jazz, blues and other stuff.

I grew up in a household that played a wide variety of musical styles. That is probably what affected my musical taste the most as I was growing up.
*Mom listened to country (Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Glenn Campbell, etc.) and soft pop (Barry Manilow, The Carpenters and others) *Dad listened to mostly rock - Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Elton John and more *Older brother listened to a lot of metal - Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Dokken, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath. *My younger brother listened to a lot of 50s rock n roll starting at about the age of 9. Buddy Holly is still one of his favorites, and he's now 29-years-old. I listened to mostly R&B, pop and a lot of hip-hop when I was younger. I was glued to R&B radio from about 1984 to 1988, but I listened to anything and everything I could, even if it meant denying that I enjoyed listening to my brother's metal records (he was my brother...I couldn't admit I liked his music as well!  )
I've given up collecting any artist, because I don't have the time, money, energy, space, etc. I have no complete collection by any artist. The closest I come to that is Madonna and Donna Summer, and I've even sold or given away a lot of stuff I have of theirs. In my adult life, I've come across music I like on my own by reading articles and books, looking through my friends' music collections, rummaging through used vinyl, eBay, The Org...anywhere I can find out about music. What is your favourite musical genre? All of the above If you collect; is Prince the only artist you collect? If not, who do you collect? Besides Prince, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, Level 42, Prefab Sprout, Kate Bush, Sly Stone, Todd Rundgren, David Sylvian, Duke Ellington, Pat Metheny Group, Aaron Copland, Fredrick Delius, Maurice Ravel, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, XTC, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Weather Report/Jaco, etc... In what way did you broaden your initial interest in other musical genres? My Parents(as well as Uncles, and older Cousins) were huge music fans, and since I can remember there was always music in the house; Jazz Classical, progressive Rock, R&B...and always reading any music magazines and articles I could find....and then there was radio, which, from the late 60's through the early 80's's, was obviously a hell of a lot different than this Clear Channel shit we've got now. Fusion artists like Prince & Herbie Hencock are what made me dig into other genres. Like, I wouldn't even think about getting into Joni Mitchell if it weren't for Prince's nod of her influence. | |

Do I really have to state the obvious?
I myself as well grew up with various Musical Genres within ears reach...
My father had a Salsa radio show on the weekends so through him I was exposed to alot of latin music Tito Puente,Celia Cruz,Fania All Stars,El Gran Combo,Hector Lavoe,Frankie Ruiz,Willie Colon,Jose Feliciano, etc.... he used to spin alot of disco/dance stuff too this is when I remember playing The Emotions "Best of my love" and Diana Ross "Upside Down" me and my twin sister 4 years old doing summersaults and cartwheels to that song thinking thats what she meant...Ok my people should have seen me coming.... My mother was into alot of Rock & Top 40 I remember being exposed to alot of Stevie Knicks,Pat Benetar,Fleetwood Mac,Eric Clapton,Bob Seager,Hall & Oats,Tina Turner,Quarterflash,etc... my mother was also a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix I also remember her playing "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugar Hill Gangalot.... my brothers on the other hand were straight up classic rock and heavy meatl heads...Black Sabbath,Rush,Iron Maiden,Led Zepplin,Pink Floyd,Metallica,Judas Preist,etc... My older sister exposed me to alot of R&B Prince,Michael Jackson,New Edition, Janet Jackson,Whitney Houston,Midnight Star,Atlantic Starr,Cherelle,Sheila E.,Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam,The Jets,etc... alot of acts from the 80's... I myself grew an appreciation for real R&B vocalists at the age of 8 when I first purchased Anita Baker's Rapture that opened me up to a whole lot of sensual R&B until this day I am a Quiet Storm freak.... in the 5th grade I discovered Salt N'Pepa and this is where my fascination with female MC's came into play...this has become a collecting past time for me...Vinyl,tapes,cd's,videos,etc...have every lady past,present,obscure to ever bless a microphone... Prince came into play with my older sister the first song i remember being exposed to by Prince was I wanna be your lover but fell in love with his music when I heard 1999 and Little Red Corvette. Unlike other Gay males I never was fanatic about one particular diva...Madonna,Janet,Whitney,Cher, all have released a song(s) here and there that i have liked...I always opted to listen to actual vocalist then pop singers, this is why I am more moved by Patti LaBelle,Aretha Franklin,Chaka Khan,Miki Howard,Stephanie Mills,Teena Marie,etc... then most of the aforementioned ladies... as far as the current musical climate...I myself like numerous other Orger's are in agreement that alot of it sucks... even Hip Hop...I bust out my BDP,Eric B. & Rakim,Slick Rick,EPMD,L.L.,Stetsasonic,etc... and revel in the golden era. I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.

If not, who do you collect? Rick James, The Bar-Kays, Roger & Zapp, Cameo, Lakeside, The Gap Band, etc. [*]In what way did you broaden your initial interest in other musical genres? When funk started dying in the late 1980s and ballads started taking over, I got into house music, which sounded very much like a reincarnation of my first love, disco. When house music went back underground and midtempo hip hop totally took over, I started getting more into rock. When rock in the 1990s started becoming invaded by hip hop and a lot of it also slowed down and stripped down to accoustical to the point that it sounded like folk, I said the hell with all current music and started exploring pop/rock that I had secretly liked growing up in the 1970s and 1980s that I would never admit I liked until the 1990s when I was much older and mature. I also can tolerate a little jazz but it has to be something with a little swing to it. I don't like it enough to really go out and buy it though. Also, being from the South, I like and can tolerate a little blues like ZZ Hill, Bobby Rush, and Denise LaSalle. However, I cannot stand whiney blues that sound like a black version of country music. I've recently started getting into 1960s R&B with a funky swing like Booker T & The MGs and Jr. Walker & The Allstars. I've also been getting into The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix lately. I'm just now starting to branch out a little more than I have ever before but I do have my strong dislikes about certain types of music that I will never like. All my favorite styles of music dying and the current horrible state that music is in today, forced me to venture into different styles that I had never explored before. I still would rather pull my old records and listen to them until current music gets better, rather than branching out. Other forms of music are cool but there's nothing like my favorites. 1. Listened to the music of my parents in childhood. 2. Listened to pop and R&B radio growing up. 3. Caught on to Prince in high school, learned about his influences, and developed interest in them as well. Prince's unique and interesting, and often challenging, sounds made me hungry for the work of other talented artists in later years. 4. Fell in love with hip-hop, and learned more about different artists via sampling, etc. which reignited my interest in classic soul. 5. Began listening to jazz. Bought the albums of the greats, learned about the careers of their sidemen, and bought the albums of the sidemen who were greats in their own right. 6. Got bored with Prince and hip-hop for a little while, about 5 years ago, and began buying newer artists' records and revisiting older artists. 7. Asked my friends about alternative/underground music like electronica and acid jazz. Got recommendations and got into it. 8. Bought stuff on Amazon.com and checked their recommendations. 9. Bought an iPod and signed up for iTunes, allowing me to cherrypick songs for a few dollars rather than blowing cash on a whole album. 10. Joined a crazy online community with other crazy people who love good music and checked out some of their recommendations. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

My father sings jazz.That's what I heard as a child.I started playing the cello when I was 9.I love John Williams(theme from Star Wars,Superman,Close Encounters...)I "found"Prince in 1982.In 1986,I started clubbing,DISCOvered House Music.Now I'm a music producer.I work with r&b/hip hop artist,but my weapon of choice is underground dance music(house,drum and bass,UK Garage,etc...)and the beat goes on! larry luvlife

Am I the only one who hates genres? When I listen to different music, I just don't see it as "I'm listening to alternative, or R&B"....just music. I really hate all of these new genres out now, it's so confusing, especially when it's something obscure/experimental or just unclassifiable. A lot of times when people ask me what type of music it is, I just end up explaining a bunch of genres all rolled into one, which kinda annoys me and the person I'm saying it to as well. That's just me though

I grew up listening to Motown, hip hop, quiet storm, gospel, and rock from all periods.
My favorite musical genre is alt rock. Im talking about the stuff that Tori Amos does and people like N.E.R.D and Res. I collect Stevie Wonder discs. I get alot of my muscial tastes from my mom. She listened to everything when I was growing up. Everything from The Eurythmics to George Clinton to Fleetwood Mack to the Pet Shop Boys. She was really all over the place.
