Congratulations, Green Day!

They will have their first ever top 10 hit in the U.S. next week when "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" climbs to #8 on Billboard's Hot 100. With hip-hop dominating U.S. radio for the last few years, it's becoming all the more rare for rock bands (not mention punk-leaning rock bands) to have a big pop hit.

"When I Come Around" and "Good Riddance" were big radio airplay hits (#6 and #11 respectively) in the U.S., but never charted on the national Hot 100 because at the time, as was Billboard's policy, only songs with a retail single were eligible to chart. This all changed in 1998 of course when because of the increasing number of radio only tracks, The criteria for charting on the Hot 100 was altered to allow for tracks without a commercially available single.

So basically, those tracks you mentioned fall into the same category as "Stairway To Heaven".

I love their new album.

American Idiot is a great Rock & Roll album start to finish.

Well there is usually room for just one rock and/or pop song in there....just squeezed in there.... It's not a bad song. Sounds like a good album overall.

Great album, great song.

It's about time a decent NEW song is being played regularly on the radio.

Reprise Records didn't release any singles back then because they thought that would cut into the album sales. In fact, I don't think Green Day has ever released a major label retail single. They've been denied many potential pop hits.
