I just had big hopes for this album. She had a lot of shit to write about, and it doesn't look like she capitalized on that. The whole album will be her standard rap collabos with lyrics about Bacardi and livin' it up. yawn

And the thing is, I KNOW she can still write worthwhile songs, because I heard "Clown".

She was on B96 here in Chicago (via phone) last week, and she said that most of the songs on her new albums are ballads. She said that she was trying to find some uptempo songs which go along with the ballads.

Having said that, as much as I love this woman and can't stand all of the hating going on all over this thread, it is fair to say that she has not put out a "masterpiece" album. Granted, she has concentrated on writing singles most of her career, and the biggest complaint I have heard about her has been that her vocals are TPEE (technically perfect; emotionally empty) and her lyrics have been banal. I believe that "Butterfly" was the closest to a complete and emotionally open concept album that she has done, but she has a tendency to be inconsistent. Her best songs (Vanishing, Until The End of Time, Melt Away, Close My Eyes, Petals, Reflections, My Saving Grace) don't even get released as singles, and I think that for the last six years or so, she has gotten lazy and tried to write hit songs instead of something more emotionally honest. I would love to hear her sing an entire album about her emotional travails, and she is extremely capable of doing an album that would put "Ray of Light" and "The Velvet Rope" to shame, but I don't know if she is willing to open herself up to that.

If there are a lot of ballads, then there's hope. But ballad-heavy records often sound too "same-y" and sag in the middle stretch, so we'll see.

I do heart Butterfly, though. Easily her best album (along w/ her debut and Daydream).

Hmmm, I'd like to see her put an album like "Velvet Rope" & "Ray of Light" to shame.....I don't believe she can do it. Even Christina Aguilera (whose been referred to as the "new Mariah though she favors more Whitney) is writing more mature music than she is. Forget songs like "Dirrty", listen to the album "Stripped" and you'll know what I am talking about. I am dissapointed in Mariah, it sucks having to pimp rappers for hits these days & trying your hardest to fit in with the Beyonces, Ciaras, and Ashanti's by writing 2nd rate material.
tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game
