Anything by grath brooks even worth picking up?

hey

yes another 'country'-post...please don't start a 'I'm bored with country treads'-tread. I promissed my psychiatrist I was going to cut down.

Anyways, is there anything by Garth brooks worth conciddering? I know he's america's best-selling solo artist after Elvis, but I'm not a huge fan of the whole country-pop genre. I mean, if he's a male shania twain, can someone warn me, cause i think i'll better stay clear of him.

grtz

I stayed clear of that guy so far simpley because I expect to end up with, like I said, a male shania twain...well I guess there's only one way to find out. I wasted money like that before, so...you're talking to a guy who baught the 'nick carter album', out of curiosity...And later thanked his lucky stars there weren't any bullets in the house that day. biggrin

In my opinion, Garth is far more traditional than Shania Twain. He even sings kinda twangy. razz

The CD single "Lost In You." It's a great song. Try and find it on iTunes, Napster, MusicMatch, etc.

If you don't have it already and you want to expand your country collection, buy this CD instead:

"You sometimes hear the expression, "If so-and-so had never recorded another album, their reputation would have been assured by this one." Unfortunately, with Gram Parsons, we didn't get another album. It is also sometimes said that the one person who died in the rock era who might have changed the entire direction of music had he lived was Buddy Holly. I agree, but I think the same could have been said of Gram Parsons. I suspect that he was only warming up when he died. I believe he was still growing as both a singer and a songwriter.

This disc is an amazing bargain. You get the entire contents of Parsons's two great solo albums, GP and GRIEVOUS ANGEL for the price of one disc.

The songs on this album are so good that it is almost impossible to overpraise them. Parsons's originals are all utterly first rate, and he did a masterful job of selecting songs to cover. My personal favorites on the album are his own compositions "Big Mouth Blues," "Return of the Grievous Angel," "In My Hour of Darkness" (which he co-wrote with Emmylou Harris), and his cover of the Louvin Brothers "Cash on the Barrelhead." And, of course, the gorgeous "live" version of "Hickory Wind," which I prefer to the previous version recorded by the Byrds (actually the "Medley Live From Nothern Quebec," consisting of "Cash on the Barrelhead" and "Hickory Wind," was recorded in a studio with audience sounds dubbed in later). These were the albums that introduced Emmylou Harris to the world, and whether singing backup or doing a duet with Parsons, she is one of the bright spots of the albums. The lead guitarist on both albums is the phenomenal James Burton, who provided stellar guitar work on the best records of performers like Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Emmylou Harris, as well as Elvis Costello's KING OF AMERICA.

Interestingly, Parsons recorded these albums when there was a considerable gulf between rock and country. Today, there is virtually no difference between country pop and rock and roll pop. That this is the case is the legacy of Gram Parsons and his protege Emmylou Harris."

More people should know about GP.
