Why do Clear Channel music stations play the same 3 or 4 songs over and over all day, every day? Is it solely to break our spirits?

Radio is actually all about selling time for commercials. The music is merely a marketing tool to lure listeners to hear the commercials. Clear Channel plays to the widest possible market.

Research shows that the average radio listener listens to the radio for 15 minutes at a time. If they don't hear a hit within the first five minutes, they are changing the station. Now if you are listening to a station long enough where you hear the same songs over and over then you are obviously doing it wrong and don't know how to play by the rules.

but wouldn't they get more money if there were more songs for them to payola-ize on to the radio? like maybe play the same 10-15 songs every day? seriously, someone at my job plays a clear channel station every night at work, and for the year and a half i've been there - A YEAR AND A HALF!!! - i hear the SAME DAMN SONG played AT LEAST five times a night. i can understand if it's burning up the charts...well, no, really, i couldn't understand that, but it would at least be understandABLE...but it's not even a hit anymore! they just play it to play it! over and over and over and over again! i wonder what would happen if i started a petition to have that station only play the song, like, FIFTY times a day instead of, like, 500 times a day? i wonder if i could sue clear channel for mental distress? it's a travesty!

Not only do they play the same songs over and over, but, on the oldies stations, they only play songs that were huge hits back in the day. The type of songs that were already worn out before they started playing them again.
Another turn off for me is when they play Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" over and over again, it is a version that I have only heard on the compilation CD, "Millenium Disco Party...The Divas". This lets me know they are playing songs from compilation albums. Being a radio station, they have nothing more than the general public has. Someone needs to start radio stations that pulls out the original vinyl albums sometimes and play something hard to find and out of print. I always said I would love to be turned loose in a radio station, but hell, I've got more original stuff in my collection than they have in their whole station. I know exactly what you mean.In my area,we have a classic R&B radio station that I love, but their playlist is too "safe" and predictable. They play the same hit songs over and over and over. For example,"Brick House" by the Commodores is played regularly.I love that song, but wouldn't it be nice to hear "Slippery When Wet" or even "Too Hot Ta Trot" once in a while? They always play "Too Tight" by Con Funk Shun, but it would be cool to hear something like "Chase Me" or "Body Lovers" every once in a while. Why keep giving us the same hits that we've already heard a zillion times? I'd rather hear the hits that haven't been played to death, lol.

There is a Clear Channel station down here that started out with an R&B format from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. It was a station that was obviously geared toward white listeners that enjoyed R&B because they only played songs that were major crossover hits. They never got into groups like Zapp, The Barkays, Confunkshun, or Cameo. They mainly played stuff like "Lady You Bring Me Up" by The Commodores, "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang, or anything by Michael Jackson. Of course, they played disco, because everyone liked disco back in the day. Everyone was enjoying the station when it first started. It was a welcome change because all the other R&B stations were dominated by hip hop. It's a little different down here than it is in average cities. This is THE home of the blues. Most of the current blues is made here on Malaco Records and most of the current blues artists live right here. Most black people down here that are fed up with today's music usually flock to the blues rather than an oldies station. Black people were enjoying the new station at first but after they continued to play the same stuff over and over and over, they went back to the blues stations. White people went back to the pop/rock stations also. I'm not into much blues, so I continued listening strictly in the car on the way to work. One morning, I heard John Denver and said "What the fuck?". They had changed their format to R&B and pop/rock from the 1960s and 1970s, they left out the 1980s this time. The majority of the black listeners left and a few new white listeners came. They may have changed the format but they continued playing the same songs over and over and over, which drove the new listeners away. Now the station brags that "you will never hear the same song played twice in one day". Well, they kept their promise, but the next day, you hear the same songs (in a different order, of course) as the day before. They have their picks and chooses of which songs they play and they absolutely will not play anything else. This is what is driving listeners away and I hope Clear Channel sees it's downfall with this. Andy is a four letter word.

All I know is, if they don't stop playing that Smokey Nostril "I Need You Now" song ten times a night, I'm going to have permanent brain damage by the time I leave that job. I even mentioned it to my co-worker who listens to the station, and she just giggled and said she liked the song and thought it was "cute" that they played it too much.
But then again, she watches Teflo Dollar sermons on her downtime, so... Oh, and interestingly enough....the same radio station has been playing "Call My Name" to death over the past couple of weeks.
