Well that's the unique thing about the band. Instead of the tried and true band photo, they decided to not even put their faces on the cover. Instead they used either random photos of various British people or obscure British movie and pop stars.

I agree. The anonymity of the covers always took me off guard. You can't really settle on them because they're not trying to sell you anything and there's so little context. They're gritty and mildly campy like an experimental found footage film, images displaced from some garbage can I guess - therefore they read "underground". And at least you can say they're consistent.

co-sign to all of that. I personally LOVE the covers of ALL the Smiths material- singles and albums. GOOD STUFF.

I like the covers too, but I think the word "random" is unfair - A lot of time and thought went into them. Whilst they may be obscure images to you or I, they no doubt held a lot of significance to Morrissey and they all have quite interesting stories behind them. (EXCEPT a couple of the non-band-endorsed compilations where pics have been used that have been considered to be similar to what the band used but had no band input - and thus no real relevance to anything)
Whether you like the look of them or not is of course a personal choice but to dismiss them as meaningless is missing the point, in my book.

If nothing else, they do seem to be very English album covers, not glossy or glitzy or Hollywood in any way, which reflects the music, the sentiments and even the damn name of the group.

What a f*cking great band nod
