Fans of Stevie Nicks and The Cure... ...have you seen this film?
I watched it for the first time last night. It's a road trip movie about a pair of goth friends (one a big Cure fan, the other a big Stevie Nicks fan) that drive from Ohio to NYC to enter the annual Night Of 1000 Stevies contest there. There are a few Cure songs in the film and Stevie's "Talk To Me" is played a lot. (I think that was the only Stevie song the film was allowed to use.) I'm leaving a lot out of course so for more info go to the official website: http://www.smallplanetpic...m/gypsy83/ The movie was in theaters for a second last year. The DVD and soundtrack are in stores now.

I saw the title of this thread and was thinking...what could they have in common and then before I read it, I figured it out. I just saw this movie. Other than the disturbing scenes (you know which ones I'm talking about!) and the fact that they couldn't get Stevie's actual music in there (it sounds an awful lot like a tribute verison and I don't think she is on the soundtrack), it was OK. Worth a rental, that's for sure. I orginally wanted to see it becuase I thought it would be an entertaining movie about goth kids, than saw it had Sara Rue from "Less Than Perfect". The "Night of A Thousand Stevies" sealed it.

Yeah, I usually expect a film about goths to be terrible, lol. It won't win any awards, but I did like it. The deleted scenes on the DVD explain a lot more about the characters. I read somewhere that "Talk To Me" was the only Stevie Nicks song used because she wasn't the songwriter. That's too bad. The soundtrack has a cover version by Diva Destruction.

I think it sucks that they that she didn't approve of anything for this movie. I was almost expecting a cameo! In the extras was also some of hte "Night of 1000 Stevies" footage but she also wouldn't clear the music for that. I wonder what her beef is with the movie because she must have one. This movie would have been improved with her music. I do, however, think they show a clip from one of her music videos (it looked like "Stand Back" but could have been "Talk To Me").

I bet she (or her publisher) was asking for a ridiculous amount of money for use of her tracks that wasn't in the movie's budget. Fortunately The Cure were a lot more generous in licensing their songs. I also watched the Night of 1000 Stevies extra, but didn't have "Edge Of Seventeen" on CD to play along with it like the director suggested.

It was kind of silly. What did you think of the short film? I liked it! The extras were all pretty good.

It definitely loses something without really hearing Edge Of Seventeen. What did you think of the short film? I liked it! The extras were all pretty good.
The short film wasn't bad. It illustrated teenage thinking and emotions very well. [Edited 1/17/05 10:36am]

Yes i've seen it. I enjoyed it for the most part. Being that I've attended and performed at Night of 1000 Stevies it was hard to watch the scene where they are actually there b/c it's not the best portrayal but I know the director had some limits b/c Warner Bros wouldn't give him the rights to use Stevies songs except TALK TO ME (b/c Stevie didn't write it). I know some of the people that did the costumes for the movie. One of them actually designed the cape I wore when I performed last year. If you live in the NYC area you should attend! We haven't been given this year's date yet but I'm rpetty sure it will be at the end of APril/beginning of May! Let the rain come down...17 days....

Glad you saw it and liked it. So was in actually Warners that was against allowing the songs (aren't Stevie's solo records on their own label, or no?)?

I'm pretty sure Warners bought out Modern (Stevie's label) in 1991. I'll check on that. Here's a little trivia for y'all. GYPSY '83 was actually filmed in 2001. Sara Rue performed "Gypsy" at the 2001 Night of 1000 Stevies (and it was also at the end of filming) It took 3 years for the movie to get picked up. A lot of Stevie fans were doing cart wheels when a release date was finally announced! LOL. Let the rain come down...17 days....

I'm sure the fact that Sara is on a semi hit show helped for them to buy and release the movie, although I have an idea it's going to have a life on video that surpasses it's release in theaters. I could have sworn I heard about this movie years ago, even before 2001, with a girl obessed with Stevie Nicks...or is this yet another movie...or maybe it was a girl obessed with Mama Cass. I think it was Mama Cass now!

Before this year, the last time I watched any of the big three networks (ABC, CBS & NBC) was when Seinfeld was still on the air.

This was a very cute movie. I think they shoulda included some of the deleted scenes in the actual film as they added more to the character development, but whatevs.
The goth boy was super-cute and Sarah Rue was great. It's definately worth a watch, although I don't think I'd recommend buying it...

I think you are thinking of Beautiful Thing? It was a UK gay-flick with a girl obsessed with Mama Cass. I believe the WHOLE soundtrack was her music. GREAT film.

I like it quite a bit. There's also the USA movie Gas Food Lodging where a young Fairuza Balk is obsessed with Olivia Newton-John. Back on target, I'm not familiar with this movie. Even though I'm only a casual fan of either of these artists, the film sounds interesting. I will definitely check it out.

BTW, I was pretty surprised this turned into a gay movie for a second. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It was an interesting twist. They never said that the guy was guy on the box...and the box should tell all! Actually, the movie had a lot of them. Some of the things were predictable but many others surprised me.

I agree the delted scenes would have made the movie stronger (better character devolpment). I had no idea why that kid seemed to be raised by the sister...was she married? And I also wouldn't buy it.

There was a scene early in the film when Clive and Gypsy walk through a graveyard and they stop at a headstone and Clive says hello to his parents and brother. At that point you know they aren't alive anymore, but you don't know how it happened until you watch the deleted scenes.
