Hall & Oates, I remember when I saw them on the Midnight special and they perform Sara smile I couldn't believe they were a white band I was like wtf. Vocally I think Simply Red is better I can't think of the lead singer, name but the boy can blow. But if I had to choose I 'll go with H&O.

lol Simply Red fucked that song up - funniest thing, it got huge airplay over here in Canada and all my less-fortunate friends thought it was original!

Hall andOates by a landslide...BUT...

I really DIG "Sunrise" - that's probably one of the best uses of a song sample.

Hall & Oates by far. Simply Red bores me to tears. I think you are referring to a mix of the two but if Simply Red was in the mix, then it destroyed a good Hall & Oates song.

It's not a mash-up. The song 'Sunrise' was built around the Hall & Oates sample loop.

I do like both songs though.

It's a tough call for me. Hall and Oates has a little more variety, which may be hard to believe. But if you are familiar with their full length albums from the 70s, up through 84's "Big Bam Boom", you'll hear how they really scratched the surface of so many different musical styles. In the 70s, they'd follow a "folky" album with a psychedlic Todd Rundgren produced album, and follow that with a straight Philly soul album, then a rock and roll album, and then a new wave album. They kind of found something they were comfortable with and didn't grow a whole lot in the 80s on, but their history is kind of impressive.

Simply Red on the other hand didn't grow a whole lot from their inception in '85 to today. In the 90s, they got a little more dance influenced, and lost some of their r&b origins. They returned to that in '03. But they also have an impressive catalog of catchy songs, and some really fabulous, underrated singles. The "Men and Women", "Stars", "Blue", and "Home" albums are all full of great tunes.

It comes down to the amount of great songs for me. There are some Hall and Oates songs that make me roll my eyes, perhaps due to being overplayed or just being cheesy- their cover of "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" and "Maneater" instantly come to mind. But they have several great, enduring songs too. Simply Red actually has a few more for me that I can count as favorites- "Holding Back the Years", "Sad Old Red", "The Right Thing", "Stars", "Your Mirror", "So Beautiful", and "Fairground" to name a few. For that I'd give the edge to Simply Red (even though Hall and Oates has a slightly more impressive catalog).

I prefer Hall & Oates, but I have CDs by both groups.

I like "Sunrise" as well; hell, considering how much of the original track Hucknall elected to use, it might qualify as a mashup unaltered! biggrin

This is a great Simply Red track. A friend of mine let me hear it a couple of years ago. If I'm not mistaken, Mick wrote this one with one of my musical idols: Joe Sample.

Mick has become so pro government over the years that he sucks big time. Whereas, back in the 80's when he was starving and broke, he was anti-establishment and made better songs like: Money's Too Tight To Mention, and Holding Back The Years just to name a few.

as I See it Simply Red had their best moments when they did cover versions. having said that they always fall waaaay behind the original.... Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes "If You don't know be know" will rip Micky into tiny little bits and pieces... and "Money's to tight to mention" (4 sure my Simply Red favourite) is still waaaaay behind the Valentine Brothers original
