George Benson

I heard George Benson's 'On Broadway' this evening and it got me to thinking about what an underrated and underappreciated artist he is. His version is a classic. His scatting and guitar playing on that cut is mindblowin'.

I just googled George and found out that he won best album of the year for the album Breezin'. The title song was the first jazz recording to soar to #1 on the pop charts in America. For some reason, I can't recall Breezin'. His other hits included 'This Masquerade,' 'Give Me The Night,' 'Love Times Love,' 'Turn You're Love Around,' and 'The Greatest Love of All.'

Are there any other George Benson fans out there? biggrin cool

When I saw this thread "On Broadway" came to mind. I LOVED this song when it first came out. I can see why "Breezin'" won "best album" it seemed like everyone owned this album when I was growing up. All I own now is a greatest hits compilation.

I guess George is the closest I've gotten to jazz. When you think of jazz greats, where does he fit in?

Oh trust me, you've heard Breezin', you'll recognize it instantly the moment you hear it. He is fantastic. I used to have an album with his cover of "Here Comes The Sun", and would play it to death on my portable record player. My mom ended up buying me a music box with that song on it, to put me to sleep at night.

His duet with Aretha Franklin, "Love all the hurt away" is also fantastic.

I'm sure that there are.
However I would be part of group that is more appreciative of his pre-Breezin', non-vocal, fret burning period.

A few examples...

If you really want to hear him play instead of sing, check some of these out. wink

The last time I saw him perform, it was on the CBS Early Show's Second Cup Cafe. He performed "Breezin" and I was impressed.I was equally impressed with that mustache that never goes away. lol

Ya know what I like? Toward the end of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star"(one of my all-time fav songs) you can hear a guitar just pluckin' a simple little melody in the background. It's credited to George, and it's beautiful.

biggrin I'm a huge George Benson fan, 'Breezin' is one of my favorite albums...Incidentally, The tune , "Breezin", was written by Bobby Womack for Guitarist Gabor Szabo(I haven't heard that version, though)...the Much more popular George Benson version came later...
