Whatever Happens - Appreciation Thread How great is this song from Michael Jackson's 'Invincible'?
I like some of the other stuff like Butterflies but this one is miles ahead of everything else, if you ask me. I just wished Santana would use a different tone once in a while... Shame this wasn't a single. Guess Santana played on too many singles back then. So, what do you think of this one?

One of the very best songs on there. Shame it was never issued as a single as I think it deserved a wider audience. His vocals are brilliant, too. Great stuff.

I like Privacy as well. The music at least, the lyrics are rather bland. [Edited 1/14/05 7:20am]

Yeah, good rhythm track but it doesn't punch quite hard enough for me.

See, I think these shoulda been the singles in the US You Rock My World Butterflies Unbreakable Whatever Happens Heaven Can Wait 2000 Watts Break Of Dawn

You Rock my World was the worst choice of first single in MJ's career, and as far as im aware, he thought that too. For some reason the record company kind of by passed his opinion on this one and they were wrong. Not saying it shouldnt have been released, but i think its more second single material a la Remember the Time.
The singles should have been 1 Unbreakable 2 You Rock My World 3 Break of Dawn or Heaven Can Wait 4 Whatever Happens 5 2000 Watts 6 Butterflies 7 Threatened The problem with this album i think is that all of the songs are single worthy in a sense but there isnt a great deal of "POP" songs its all Rnb/Soul/Ballad type stuff, which i think was a brave decision for michael to make because most of his albums since Thriller have all focused on the uptempo stuff, this record focused on the ballads!

I disagree, I think it's a stronger track than both Scream & Blood On The Dance Floor. I only started to like Scream one I'd seen the vid.

And that's exactly why I rate Invincible so highly. It was Michael getting back to his roots. It was more like his early stuff, soulful laid-back grooves. Some of his best ever stuff is on that album, no matter how folk try to convince me otherwise.

Whatever Happens is the shit. I'd piss if him and santana did it live. Spanish like music sounds great in some songs.
I hate mentioning p in this thread What Do U Want Me 2 Do? is another example....mabye he heard whatevehap? The problem with invincible was some tracks were just plain shit and should have been left out. The whole album was a struggle between the commercial and the artistic. If mike does another album he should focus on the art, there's always goona be lots of crazy romanians buying his shit anyway. A new Michael studio album will sell at leat 5 - 10 million worldwide. You gotta make way for the young folks even if they do suck. But whatever happens and butterflies are classics. The ballads sucked, they should have been jazzier and more organic. I'd rather listen to one day in your life or any other sappy ballad from motown than what was on invincible. Mike should get whatever happens used in a movie, an independent movie that won't care about his current situation or use it in a live album with the roots as his band. ?love would be down.

umm, no i tend to disagree, i think the ballads on invincible were "career best", butterflies, speechless, dont walk away, heaven can wait, break of dawn wow!
He shoulda left off 2000 watts, privacy and you are my life and we woulda had a great album 1 unbreakable 2 heartbreaker 3 invincible 4 break of dawn 5 heaven can wait 6 you rock my world 7 butterflies 8 speechless 9 we've had enough 10 fall again 11 dont walk away 12 the lost children 13 whatever happens 14 threatened maybe that list needs another uptempo around track 10-11 but imo this tracklist is much more consistently good, whilst not losing the feelings he was trying to get across on the record. i know many folk dont like speechless, dont walk away, the lost children, but imo i think the album wouldnt b as sincere and humble without those tracks to tone down his erratic anger!

You Rock My World is a MILLION times better than The Girl Is Mine. I prefer it over I Just Can't Stop Loving You as well. So I guess that makes it my third fave lead off single after Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Black Or White. . [Edited 1/17/05 2:00am]

Invincible was an interesting record singles wise.....I agree with funkybrotha on the singles.
"whatever happens" has great vocals, but track is average to me. My favs lean towards the uptempo's off this album. When i first got it, I thought the album could not get any better with the first 3 songs.....then came "break of dawn" which is nice but..... U c if he released albums more then every 4-5 years then I would not be so critical...but he decides to let it all hang on 1 album. So dissapointment almost comes as standard.

Nope, these should have been the singles,in this order... "You Rock My World" "Butterflies" "Whatever Happens" "Heaven Can Wait" the slower tracks are superior to the uptempo numbers imo.

I totally agree! The slower tracks and ballads are career highlights for him. Most of the uptempo tracks sound uninpired by comparison.
