Joan Osborne

The woman deserves an appreciation thread. Anyone else care to comment on her?

Her last release "How Sweet It Is" was beautifully done and she did those covers justice. Now, everyone praises Joss Stone and the crap she puts out, but that is what a cover album should sound like. If only Joan had gotten the same media attention for her recent work . . .

I think she did a tasteful cover of The Spinners' "I'll Be Around" on her latest disc. "Relish" was a quality album. Loved "One of Us" (one of the best songs of the '90s, IMO).

No, I love Joan and her raspy voice too. biggrin "Crazy Baby" is one of my favorite songs by her. And I never get tired of "St. Theresa" and "Right Hand Man".

Was never into her, but I came around when I saw "Standing In The Shadows of Motown." Then saw her live with the Funk Brothers and now know that she can in fact lay it down.

The live version of "CRAZY BABY"...is fucking insane... it's the lyrics mostly..she can wail..don't get me wrong...but...I'm a little sick of seeing female singers toting around a guitar like they got something important to say.

CRAZY BABY (live) ...listen to it!!!

I was kinda late getting "How Sweet It Is" (it was hard to find in stows) but that was what sent me into a whole new level of appreciation for her artistry. Standing in the Shadows of Motown with her and Meshell on it was such a treat. I'm just going through my Joan phase right now. Brings back good memories too. smile

Where can I get my hands on it?
And I agree with you Anck and Voices. It kinda sux that she gets indentified by "One of Us" when she has so much better material to represent her.

Yes indeed! That's when she made me a believer! I liked "One Of Us" but she was even better on "Standing In The Shadows...."

I have Relish and Righteous Love. I wasn't feeling Righteous Love that much. Very different from Relish. So I take it this one is worth picking up?

Yeah, Relish was good, but HOW SWEET IT IS sooooo great.

Those songs are totally remade and she sounds so good there.

She's great and it's a pity she's so underrated...
Anyways... when you have any news about her new material, post it here

I got hipped to Joan Osborne while still working at Virgin. The album jumped at me because it was religious, yet critical. I love that.

But the thing I love most is that voice... and that deadpan blues delivery on Relish. That is the album I cherish most as it has St Teresa on it. The way that song cuts into your vertibrae and clings there is amazing.

i am loving this joan osborne-early tracks cd..now, the bulk of it is live songs and/or rough cuts of stuff but to hear the evolution her style (expecially vocally) is a neat thing to hear on a single cd..by the end she sounds like the joan we all know and love and belts out a fierce arse versions of "son of a preacher man" live...

She's incredible.

I've heard comparison's to Janice Joplin and some blues singers, but she's very much her own.

I think the reason why I liked her so much is that her vocal abilities allowed her to convey a multi-color palett of emotions, where all the annoying (though some talented) female singers in the limelight during the 3 year "female dominance" streak in the states was taking place, could only convey emotions in the realm of some vague albiet passionate sense of longing. Within the first few bars of any of her songs she was able to encompass all the yearning of Jewell, all the ferocity of Alanis Morrisett, and many times the soul of Mariah Carey. A real classic chic.

Do any of you guys think Prince is gay?

I'm literally about to cry! I have loved on Righteous Love ever since it was released and don't even get me started on "If I was your Man". That song smacks of magic or an ancient spell. She fucked shit up hard with that one. That song just floors me. I have that song on a comp sandwhiched inbetween PJ Harvey's "2 Bring You My Love" on one end and Prince's "If I Was Your Girlfriend" on the other.

Joan is incredibly underrated and doesn't put out nearly enough music to keep me satisfied. I didn't dig on Relish until I heard Righteous Love. That album is freaken fabulous. Definitely my favorite of the three. Her covers album is beautiful as well.

One time she was on the show "Duets" on MTV (or VH1) the night Melissa Etheridge was the main attraction. They sang "Bring Me Some Water" and dayum if they didn't tear it up like it was the last chance they ever had to sing. That performance illustrated how gifted she is. Music just came pouring out like a rushing river. When Joan gets moving, she's like a runaway train.
