Paula Abdul - Spellbound - appreciation thread Ok, I know what you're all thinking, but hear me out.
1 The Promise of a New Day 2 Rock House 3 Rush, Rush Lord 4 Spellbound 5 Vibeology 6 U 7 My Foolish Heart 8 Blowing Kisses in the Wind 9. To You 10 Alright Tonight 11 Will You Marry Me? I think this is Paula's finest hour (whatever you think of her) and a really good pop album overall. It's pretty much forgotten today, even though it had 5 big hits lifted from it (#1's Rush Rush and The Promise Of A New Day, and the Top 20 Vibeology, Will You Marry Me, and Blowing Kisses In The Wind) - probably because it was a disappointment sales-wise compared to Forever Your Girl. This is at heart a dance LP, but the songs are sharper and more diverse than Forever Your Girl. Credit must be given to her production team, who added a more sophisticated production sheen and funkier edge to some of the songs here (most notably on Vibeology, which I still think ranks as one of the best early-90's dance hits). It's safe to say this has aged a hell of a lot better than her first LP. The Prince-penned U is also pretty good. The album is ballad-heavy, but thankfully they didn't give her songs that stretched her (very limited) range. Rush Rush was a wise choice for a first single, and it's probably her best-loved song. Will You Marry Me has a very pretty melody line.

Good call. I love this album. The production on most the tracks is from a band called the family stand. They made serious music too and it was great to c them do pop like this. Despite the pop production, u can see Sandra st victor singing "promise of a new day" for example so that is why album is proberly still so good.
"blowing kisses in the wind" has a gorgeous melody and I have a soft spot for "will you marry me", which has Stevie Wonder on harmonica. The uptempo's r hot though. Britney Spears I swear copied her on the title track "spellbound", sounds just like her on the ad-libs. I love that track. "promise of a new day" is a great opener and a great song that sets a good state of mind. "rock u house" has a housey feel (well obviously) and is a great dance track. The last 2 tracks r odd 4 Paula but r good nontheless. odd that "forever your girl" album had 0 ballads if I can remember. She corrected this by debuting with ballad "rush rush"

But I think "Head Over Heels" might be just as good as "Spellbound". [Edited 1/16/05 12:16pm]

Wow. You really like this project. I had this album back in the day and I do remember enjoying the songs heavily. This was during a pop moment went people ACTUALLY put her in the same high roller category as Janet and Madonna for a brief moment ("Forever Your Girl" sold MANY copies and she was on top of the world in the pop game at this album's release) -- with this project, sadly for Paula that soon faded and so did her career.
My favorites were the title track, "Rush Rush," "Vibeology," "Rock House" and "U" was decent, too. I can't listen to "Will You Marry Me" without thinking of Emilio Estevez, though. I get that visual of his short self in my mind with that quasi-mullet. Nevertheless, Spellbound was a good era for Paula.

Great album, but I prefer Forever Your Girl, and Head Over Heels. Did you order a pizza ma'am? Prince- UTCM

This is the one Paula Abdul album worth owning. The production on it is really smart (she made a wise choise with the Family Stand), and the songwriting is much improved over Forever Your Girl. There are a few week tracks - Will You Marry Me, Alright Tonight and Rock House don't do much for me - but the rest are good to great.
Vibeology is everything a dance track should be; silly, in-the-moment, catchy and fun, and the horns really gave the song a great hook. But my favorites on this album are the ballads. Rush, Rush was a very good choice for a single and was a nice complement to her vocal range. The video raped one of my favorite movies, but that's another story. Blowing Kisses in the Wind is my favorite of all her songs, and, I think, one of the best pops songs from that era.

I'll sign; I really enjoy the production on this album. It has a really thick sound to it, not very typical of what was on the radio at the time. For a singer with such a limited range, Paula's voice doesn't sound too bad on this disc either. I have to admit that I did have a pretty big crush on Ms. Abdul at this point, also.
Nostalgia rules! I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

"head over heels"(1994) had a few decent tracks. Like the color me badd written "never gonna give you up" "my love is for real" and the breezy "crazy cool"....."ho down" was great too. With the cab calloway sample and all.
