I don't know too much about playing guitar, but anyway: Frusciante is good but he is also very overrated..... Why? Because he has become this legend! In in '92-'94 he was an hardcore heroine-junkie, stepped out of the Peppers and everybody thought he was going to die..... Well, Johnnie didn't die, Johnnie managed to do what was seemingly impossible: kick his very serious heroine-habit. He has worked hard on his comeback and made it back into the Peppers. Now he is receiving all that respect.....Sure, he is a good guitar-player, but I liked his style better while he still was hooked on smack. Listen to Blood, Sugar. Sex, Magik.....that shit was funky! Now compare that to the lousy By The Way..... eek

People love survival stories.....Frusciante is ok, not exceptional! Definitely not better than Prince!

Prince is more versatile, Prince can also play very fast and precise.
Frusciante is a good guitarist, but I don't consider him to be 'great'.

Prince is one of the most underrated guitarists around, but he's got great technique and plays very emotional. But that's only my opinion.

Back in the old days, They described Prince as the reincarnation of Hendrix.. they called him that for a reason.

Yes , there ARE a FEW good songs on it but many sound alike , for instance
the chorus in "Universally Speaking" sounds almost identical to "The Zephyr Song"
And there are really quite a few unispired songs on it too

You just have to admit that 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' was their last good effort. It was loud, funky, punky & nasty.....and Anthony was still rapping. John's guitar-work was smoking and Flea's bass thumping!
Just listen to songs like 'My Lonely Man', Frusciante's outbursts on 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik', Flea on 'Funky Monks', etc. etc.

I want my Peppers back! Fuck that crooning shit they made afterwards!

Navarro was a mistake.....cool dude, killer-guitarist but just didn't fit in!

I am only familiar with the more up-to-date Chilis stuff but from what I've heard I always thought Frusciante kinda sucked neutral

There's something not quite right about the Chilis' whole sound that I can't put my finger on. It's sort of thin sounding...

Prince is by far the more accomplished guitarist.

How can you say Dave Navarro was a mistake when you haven't even heard the album ?!
Very trippy psychedelic AND funky guitar playing thumbs up!
"Tearjerker" is a great song

This is why you should go back....go way back to their earlier stuff. nod

Get "Freaky Styley" (produced by George Clinton) and "Mother's Milk". SO funky.

Mother's Milk is the best RHCP CD with John. BSSM, the beginning of the end.

Anxy: I've been trying to get my hands on that for a while, but none of my local stores will order it because it's like $50 bucks and nobody wants to uste their Japan distributors. It just got re-released with a different cover and package.

I have heard the album, I just never bought it!
About Navarro: it didn't feel right, something about the chemistry. Navarro (I do like him) was great in Jane's Addiction, and he's good as session-/guest- guitarist. Hell, I even liked the performance he gave with Christina Aquilera at the VMA's a couple of years ago (I believe it was 'Younger').....

I love "One Hot Minute," but I listen to it when I'm in the mood for Jane's. It's hard to mix it in with BSSM or Mother's Milk. It sounds like the missing link between Deconstructon and Jane's Addiction's Strays album.

To me, it sounds like a quarter Navarro doing Frusciante, a quarter Kiedis doing Farrell, and half uniqueness. biggrin

I think By The Way has some great stuff on it. It's a bit long and some of the lyrics suck. But same with their masterpiece Blood Sugar...

Never bought Californication, but the stuff on the radio sounded like By the Way, that is, an older more mellow Chili Peppers. I think their new stuff is more mature, diverse, musical, and thoughtful than Freaky Styley. Just less funky.

As for John, he's great. He's really trying to be understated at this point. Adds a few long notes where Dave Navarro (who's also great) would blast us with guitar. John seems to fit with where they are at the moment, but I really liked One Hot Minute, too.

I totally agree!! I have even emailed John Blackwell for him & Prince to listen to John's Solo work & Of course the Peppers cool

John & Prince have the same basic vibe, the only difference is the way they talk. John is more Cali-Surfer Laid Back. But they both bring up the same topics. They would get along great!
