Crouch on Ellington's Later Work

As much as I disagree with many of Crouch's views, I have to admit he is a superb writer and student of jazz, and he has an excellent article on much of the Duke's later, less heralded work in the 50's and 60's. Here's a link:

Stanley is a trip...

He comes across as a close-minded snob in cultural matters, and that comment doesn't change my mind one bit. When he writes about jazz he likes, he's right on. But if he includes "A Love Supreme" in that "hopeless noise" category we're gonna have at it!

I must say, all of the Later ellington work that he praises is among my favorite things the duke ever recorded. The Jazz party version of Satin Doll is absolutely divine
