Have you ever bought a cd by an artist that you've never heard of?

Have any of you ever gone to a cd store and just radomly bought a cd because the cover looked interesting? I have! I bought Mount Sims about 2 years ago and luckily ended up loving it. It's an electro album, very Prince-ish. The funny thing is that about a week after I bought it I started hearing about him and seeing him in magazines. Funny innit?

Rarely bought anything by an artist I hadn't heard of. Though many times I've bought music by artists I had never heard anything by.

Only for someone else. I bought my mom a Credence Clearwater Revival album before I had ever heard of them. Though she asked for the album, so I had heard the name before I bought it. Funny, I didn't expect they would be any good!

back in the day (oh, lord, not another "when i was young story!"), there was a used record store in my neighborhood, and i would go in every week. used records were $2. i would go in with $10-$20, and buy a couple of things that i had my eye on, and then a few just random stuff. i would buy bizarre jazz, classical, old timey rock and roll, cheesy looking metal albums, whatever. of course, a lot of it i took back and re-sold. but, i got turned on to a lot of great stuff. these days, even used cds are $10 a piece, i just can't do that sort of thing any more.

Jill Scott. I went to the record store to by Common's cd. I asked the clerk where the cd was. She told me and then preceded to tell me that if I liked Common, I would probably like Jill Scott's cd because it had spoken word on it. I had never heard of Jill Scott, but something told me to go ahead and buy the cd. I ended buying the Who Is Jill Scott? cd, instead of the one I had intended to buy. When I got home and played the cd, I realized that I had heard the song "Getting In The Way" on the radio many times, but never knew who sung it. As a matter of fact, I hated that song. I ended up playing that cd nonstop. It was incredible. I even became a fan of "Getting In The Way." wink

If the price is right, I'll take a chance on almost anything.

It can have happy consequences, sometimes...for example, in 1988, I picked up an absolutely horrible album by a dreary German prog-rock band called Amon Duul II. I knew nothing about the band - I just thought it hand an interesting cover and the price was low. When I went up to the counter, the clerk said "if you like these guys, you should check out Can". I picked up a copy of Soon Over Babaluma about a week later and they've been pretty much my favourite band ever since.

I bought this CD before hearing a song by her.

The only reason I bought it was because Raphael Saadiq was featured and produced a track (which happens to be the only good song on the album lol)

He's apparently French, I think, but he does sort of this fusion, electric country music and he sings like a drunk French cowboy and you would think this would turn you off, but it's oen of those "road trip" CDs. I only play it if I'm driving long distance somewhere. I don't normally like country, but it's like he took the cool part of country music and added this bluesy, fusion-esque edge to it and he has a killer way of adding sound effects to the music with his guitar and guitar synthesizer. I've searched the net for him and found maybe one reference. I think he has another CD out. The only reference to him I found was he played at a French jazz festival some years ago. The CD is from 1994.

A few years ago, I spent a lot of money buying cds for myself. I figured I'll pick one up for my wife. I had no idea what I was buying - I still don't know the name of that cd.

I almost did the same thing. But when I saw he only produced one track I thought I'd wait and see what the verdict would be. I was impressed with the other tracks I heard so I passed...

Well I heard "Be Your Girl" and wanted to buy it, but had to wait. By then, I had also heard "Take Me" featuring Raphael Saadiq, and I was sold.

I actually have 3 lesser-known artists:

1) Amel Larrieux "Bravebird"
2) Heather Headley
3) Jerzee Monet

All very talented ladies with great voices and albums that have substance, but God forbid they should get any airplay, since they aren't walking around half-naked in their vides...depressing how low some female artists have gotten in the last couple years. barf
